Kissing. Did she remember how to do that? Static flooded her brain.

Holly positioned herself in front of Jen, awkwardly hovering. ‘I don’t really know how to start this.’

‘It was your plan,’ Jen replied with a grin, hiding the fact she felt close to passing out.

Holly stepped closer, straddling Jen’s feet.

Jen gripped the counter, hoping her good leg wouldn’t buckle or shake. Holly placed her hands on Jen’s hips, making her jump.

Holly’s gaze didn’t falter, her brown eyes held steady with Jen’s. ‘There’s nothing to be nervous about.’

‘I know, it’s just. . . first time, and all that.’

‘First time kissing ever?’ Holly replied with a cheeky smile.

The joke made it better. Every muscle in Jen’s body relaxed. ‘Feels like it.’

Holly inched closer. ‘Okay,’ she said quietly. ‘Let’s do this.’

She closed her eyes, tilted her head, and edged closer, raising her head to Jen’s level, her hands gripping tighter as she found height. Their lips were millimetres apart when Jen burst out laughing, the sound cutting through the tension of the room like a foghorn.

She couldn’t help it. This was absurd. She tried to remember the last time she’d kissed in this kitchen, fogging the otherwise crystal clear image of Alison for fear of turning her stomach, but trying to latch onto a little normalcy. She’d kissed in this spot a thousand times. This was no different. Jen giggled again.Nope.It was ludicrous. Maybe she did have a concussion. Was this a dream?

Holly tried and failed to look serious. ‘Come on, now.’

‘I know, I know,’ Jen said, finally getting a handle on herself. ‘I’m just nervous. This doesn’t feel real.’

Holly straightened herself, thinking. She removed her hands from Jen’s hips and, for a brief moment, Jen thought Holly had backed out.

‘We need to ease into this, set it up,’ Holly said, her fingers skirting over Jen’s. The tiny gesture sent a ripple of want through her, not boding well for proving her just-horny theory right.

‘So, back to date two,’ Holly began, her eyes finding Jen’s again. Heat flushed through her body like someone had lit a fire. Hover a hand over Jen’s skin and you’d feel the warmth; heck, you could toast a marshmallow if you fancied it. ‘You’ve asked me round to watch a film or something.’

‘Uh-huh.’

‘We’re comfy on the sofa, maybe we’ve had a few drinks. . . halfway through the film, you get brave and you put an arm around me, like you just did a minute ago.’ She lifted Jen’s hands, placing them on her own hips.

If her heart was fast before, it was supersonic now. Jen gulped, eager to know where the story was headed. She’d played out a similar scenario in her head last night. Would kissing Holly feel like she’d imagined?

‘I follow your lead, and snuggle in,’ Holly continued, returning her hands to Jen’s hips. Never mind roasting marshmallows: Jen’s insides were goo themselves. She was more than surprised her good leg was still able to hold her up. ‘Then it’s that tantalising moment, that bit of a date when you don’t know what’s going to happen. You both desperately want to kiss, but who’s going to make the first move?’ She dropped her voice low; it was as smooth as melted chocolate. Jen could just dive right in. ‘Eventually, I get brave and close the gap.’

Jen was wet before Holly’s lips had even found hers. Her brain short-circuited, all feeling flooding to her mouth and core. Her lips moved with Holly’s, slowly at first, then deeper, the brunette’s hand gripping tighter on her waist, drawing her closer. Her hips pressed into Jen’s, pushing her back against the counter. She couldn’t help but moan as Holly’s tongue slipped between her parted lips, finding her own and dancing as the kiss continued.

She was hoping to stamp out any possible sparks, but she’d started an inferno instead. This kiss could never end; she wanted to feel like this forever. It was better than anything she’d imagined, and how could it be anything but? It was beyond any kiss she’d ever experienced. If this was how Holly kissed friends, her lovers were bloody lucky.

Three years without doing this. Was she mad? This was the best feeling in the world.

Holly’s soft lips moved in rhythm with her own; there was no knowing where she ended and Holly began. Her hand found its way under Holly’s T-shirt, her fingers grazing hot skin, and she felt Holly smile before taking her turn to groan. Jen wallowed in the feeling, letting the moan settle on her skin, enveloping her in delicious heat. Neither was breaking the connection. Was it meant to go on for this long? Jen didn’t care – she wasn’t going to be the one to finish first. Desire flushed from the base of her neck to her core, a delicious path of straight-up hunger, pinging its way south like a pinball.

She could do this all day. With Holly, at least. This was the kind of kiss that ended in the bedroom with a trail of clothes marking the way.

Or it would, if this were real.

But this was a one time performance. Just two friends, snogging the life out of each other to break the ice and win some money.

Fuck, this was a stupid idea. Jen was in trouble. Serious, serious, trouble. The throbbing between her thighs and the ache in her chest confirmed her worst fears: she liked Holly. A lot.

Holly called time, but not before gently biting Jen’s bottom lip. She let her speak first – right now Jen was incapable of words, never mind sentences.
