ChapterFourteen

“Ido apologize, however, for keeping you waiting. I was waylaid.”

“This late?”

“I have no intention of being interrogated, Miss Duke. I came here to receive answers, not to give them.” Day stepped into view, her expression the same severe semi-scowl she’d worn in every one of our encounters.

Illyria’s temper was rising. I recognized the tick in her cheek even from where I peeked around the trunk of the tree, and I hated that I knew the bitch so well. “Right, of course.”

“Well? Do you have anything to share?”

“I haven’t seen anything concrete. You know my visions are possibilities and can fluctuate based on how much I interfere. Or you. If you’re doing things to facilitate your end goal, you could be redirecting the future.”

“Yes, girl, I’m well acquainted with how visions work.” The word “girl” dripped with condescension, and I honestly wouldn’t have blamed Illyria if she smacked the shit out of Alvina. I also wouldn’t help her when the headmistress retaliated, but that was neither here nor there.

“Of course you are.”

“Is there anything new to tell me or not? There had better be, Miss Duke, otherwise I’m going to be livid.”

“I saw you, Professor. I saw you arguing with someone, but I couldn’t make out who it was. They’re hidden from me. Whoever it is can either hide themselves from clairvoyants somehow, or they’re being shielded by a benefactor.”

“Was there nothing that could be helpful? Did you recognize the voice, by chance?”

“No, I couldn’t hear it clearly. It was garbled, but you told them you never would have gone along with something if you’d known.”

Alvina frowned, eyes narrowing as she digested the information.

“Can you tell me where I was? Anything about the surroundings might prove helpful.”

“It was here on campus, one of the classrooms, but that’s all I could make out. I couldn’t tell you which one.”

“I see.” She cleared her throat, a fake smile overtaking her face. “Is there anything else you remember? What else I was saying to this mystery person?”

“Yes. You said, ‘You’d better take care of it, or Keres will be the end of us all.’”

Illyria’s scowl and Alvina’s raised brows had nothing on my own shock.

I’ll be the end of who? And why?

“This is very important, Miss Duke. Think hard. Do you know when this is going to happen? Could you make out what was beyond the window to see if there were leaves or snow covering the grounds?”

“No, Professor. I wasn’t facing the window, just the door. That’s how I know it will happen here. The door in my vision had the same opaque windows as all the classrooms on campus.”

“I see. Well, I need you to continue to see if there’s anything you can glean from your visions. I want to be apprised as soon as you see anything. And remember, this must remain between the two of us. Is that understood?”

“Of course, Professor.” This time, Illyria’s voice was the one dripping with disdain.

Alvina turned on her heel and stalked away, gait hurried and face drawn. She didn’t like the report she’d just received, and neither did I.

Hearing my name come up in their sneaky little meetup was… unpleasant. I didn’t know what it meant, but it confirmed Alvina Day was up to something. She hadn’t been surprised to hear my name, which meant I had some digging to do. I was going to find Darrio and talk to him as soon as I got back to campus.

If only Illyria would leave, dammit. She stood in the small clearing and tapped on her phone again. Whoever the hell she was texting should be asleep, dammit!

Several exchanged messages later and Illyria finally started back for the school. I waited long enough to give her a good head start, then followed suit.

My mind raced at the possibilities of what Alvina could be up to, none of which made me too happy. All I wanted was to get through this damn school year, was that too much to ask?

Apparently, the answer was a resounding “duh.”
