My phone may not know who the sender was, but I did.

Remy.

How did he always know what was happening around Divinity?

We hadn’t spoken since the night he lost control and killed every living thing in our vicinity. Everything except me. I wasn’t sure if that was because it was harder to kill a goddess than a fish, or if I was somehow immune to his power, but I hadn’t stuck around to find out.

Now he wanted me to be alone with him again. That didn’t seem like the smartest idea, but it would be a lie to say I wasn’t curious about what he might have to say.

My instinct was to ask River what I should do, since I clearly wasn’t objective about the situation, but when I looked up from my phone, I found River’s eyes fixed on Ben, while his were directed at me.

So much for getting her advice.

“Sorry, I’ve gotta run. River, you and Ben make a plan for the party and fill me in later.” A faint blush colored River’s cheeks, and I bit back my smile. Her crush on Ben was so obvious to me now, but he seemed so oblivious. I wondered how it was possible for someone to be so blind to another’s attraction to them.

Leaving my phone to finish charging, I ducked out of our room with a quick grin at River, ignoring her scowl. Illyria was still on the couch, but I didn’t spare her a glance. I may have slammed the outer door a little harder than absolutely necessary on my way out.

My heart pounded harder with every step I took toward the garden where Remy had begun to teach me to control the darker side of my abilities. Where he’d first kissed me. I maintained a brisk pace and tried to ignore the ominous feeling that settled over me as I drew closer. It would be fine. I would be fine.

The deep, sunken place inside me where my death power dwelled warmed and began to tingle.

Maybe not.
