I quickly took off my underwear, slipped on my coat and some heels, then stuck my leg out of the bedroom door so he could see me as soon as he walked into the hallway.

‘I’m in here, loverboy,’ I purred, sliding my leg up and down the doorway as seductively as I could.

‘Soph, can you come out here, please?’ Lorenzo called out. Thank goodness Leo was in a deep sleep. From the sound of his voice, Lorenzo had only just reached the hallway so must have missed me sticking my leg out the first time.

‘So you want to shake things up again? Fancy doing it on the sofa?’

It was always fun to experiment outside of the bedroom.Exciting.

I slid my leg out again and just as I was about to step outside the room and drop my mac completely, Lorenzo cried out.

‘Sophia! Mamma is here! With me.’

WTF.

What was Marta doing here at this time of night?

And Jesus. I hoped she hadn’t seen my leg. For once I was glad she didn’t speak English; otherwise she would have understood what I was saying. Thank goodness I hadn’t gone ahead with flashing Lorenzo either. I didn’t need to add anothercaught in the act by the mother-in-lawencounter to my list.

I tightened the belt around my mac, slipped off my heels and stepped outside.

Huh?

‘What’s going on?’ I frowned, staring at the large suitcases beside him. ‘What’s with the cases? Is Marta going on holiday?’

Although I’d miss the babysitting, I definitely wouldn’t miss her judgemental looks. I wondered how long she’d be gone for.

‘No… there was an accident, that is why I am home early.’

‘Accident?’

‘There was a fire. At Mamma’s house.’

‘Oh God! Is she okay? Was anyone else there? Did anyone get hurt?’ Whilst she wasn’t my favourite person in the world, I didn’t dislike her enough to want any harm to come to her. I glanced at Marta, looking for signs of injury. She seemed a little paler than usual, but generally okay. Like always, she looked at me like she was sucking a bitter lemon. Yep. Marta was fine. Lorenzo still hadn’t explained the suitcases, though...

‘There was no one else there. Mamma is a bit shaken. Thank God is nothing very serious.’ He wrapped his arm around her and gave her a gentle squeeze. ‘But the kitchen is badly damaged and she needs to cook. An Italian home is nothing without a kitchen!’ He smiled. ‘And we will need to get experts to check the house. To make sure it is safe. So Mamma cannot stay there.’

Oh no.

No, no, no…

Please don’t tell me he’s going to say what I think he’s going to say…

‘So of course, I said that Mamma can stay here. With us.’

My eyes popped out of my head and my stomach plummeted so far I was surprised it didn’t fall through the floor.

Marta? Living here? In the same house? Under the same roof? Scrutinising me and our lives twenty-four hours a day?

You havegotto be joking.
