I knew what she was asking. She wanted to know if I’d stick around not just in the industry, where I could potentially be some kind of alternative competition, but also if I’d want to remain in the business.

She didn’t need to know that I had absolutely no idea what I’d do after this. But I was sure it wouldn’t involve beauty PR and that was all that was important to her.

‘No. I want this to be a clean sale. Pardon the pun, but this willbecomeyour business. It will beyourvision,yourdirection,yourteam.Yourdream. I’ll be happy to provide some level of consultancy, if you need it, for say the first couple of months, but after that, I want to put all of my efforts into projects completely outside of the industry.’

Rhonda was beaming. I knew she was as much of a control freak as I was. She would like to take the business and make it her own from the get-go. The last thing she’d want was me sticking my oar in. I didn’t want to be involved and she wouldn’t want my involvement. It was the perfect scenario. Win-win.

‘You’ve got yourself a deal.’

And those were the magical words I wanted to hear.

As we shook hands, I felt a flood of relief rush through me.

It was still early days and there were so many more things to discuss. Not just money. I also wanted to make sure that people like Robyn were looked after, but right now, the signs were looking good. There was hope.

I was one step closer to freedom.
