Chapter Twenty-Three

Ilooked at the clock on the bedside table. It was either 4.17 a.m. or 4.27–I couldn’t quite make out the numbers. Everything looked blurry. I was dying for the loo, but I felt awful. After not drinking properly for over a year, just like Reasanna had warned me, I was crazy to have so much. But I was back safe and I’d had fun, so that was the important thing. Although I didn’t quite remember doing it, somehow I also managed to walk to my room, take my clothes off and get into bed.

It felt good to sleep half-naked for a change. Before, I didn’t think twice about being completely in the buff, but these days I always wore a nightdress to bed to cover my lumps and bumps.

Dammit. I couldn’t hold it any longer. I had to go. I threw off the duvet and got up.

Whoa. The room was spinning.Definitelyoverdid it. I blame the limoncello. The quicker I went to the toilet the quicker I could lie back down.

Steady…

I stumbled across the room. I could barely see. I rubbed my eyes. Maybe I should have put on the light. Couldn’t be bothered to walk back to do that now. I’d be fine.

I stretched my hands out in front of me so that I could feel when I’d reached the door. Or at this rate, walked into a wall…

There it is. I opened the door and stepped inside.

Wow. It’s bright in here!

Must be some sort of sensor as the lights weren’t on a minute ago. But I could have sworn they didn’t come on automatically before. I usually switched them on manually didn’t I?

I rubbed my eyes again.

In fact, what’s happened to my bathroom? It looked completely different. And wait. The bath and the sink had disappeared? And where was the toilet?

Oh dear.

This wasn’t the bathroom…

This was the corridor.

I’d opened the wrong bloody door.

The bathroom and the room door were right next to each other. I’d mixed them up.

I was now standing in the very public corridor in just my knickers.

Shit. Shit. Shit.

I quickly wrapped my arms across my chest to shield my boobs.

Someone could come out of their room at any minute.

Oh God.

I looked down. My stomach hung over my knickers. My stretch marks were there for all to see and my thighs were dimpled with cellulite. The thought of Lorenzo seeing me was bad enough, but strangers? That would be even worse.

I tried opening the room door again, but of course it was locked. The only way to get back in would be to go to reception and ask for a key. But I couldn’t do that. Then the hotel staff would see me too.

I scanned the walls. I hoped they didn’t have CCTV, otherwise there was probably some security guy sat in a basement laughing at me right now.

Roxy and Bella.

I scanned my brain trying to remember their room numbers. I knew they’d got separate rooms as Bella reckoned Roxy might hook up with a guy and didn’t want their bedroom acrobatics to keep her up all night. I thought Bella had said her room was on the floor below, but I was pretty sure Roxy was on the same floor as me. Room 204 or 214? Or maybe it was 240…

Think, think, think.

The only way to know was to try…
