Chapter Forty-Six

‘You played it to her?’

‘Sì.’

‘But you promised not to!’ I shouted.

‘No. I promise not to play it toLorenzo.I said nothing about Marta…’

‘What exactly happened?’

‘Not much.’ Geli shrugged her shoulders. ‘I went to see her this afternoon, play her the recording and said if she wanted to see her son and grandson again, would be good for her to agree to whatever you and Lorenzo want. Including to leave the house tonight and to give her blessing for you both to leave. That is all.’

Whoa. I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when Geli had rocked up.Imagine Marta’s face when she heard the recording.

‘Marta’s face must have been a picture!’

‘I do not understand?’

‘Sorry, I mean, she must have been shocked.’

‘Of course. But she is smart woman. She understand that she did not have a choice. For me, playing the recording to her was perfect. You worry because you did not want to damage Lorenzo’s relationship with his mother or upset him.Sì?But now Marta has said that she is happy about you and Lorenzo going away, Lorenzo still believes his mum is amazing and you get to live better life away from her with him.’

She was right. Wish I’d thought of the idea now. Then again, I reckoned it was better coming from Geli. Knowing that someone other than me had the recording would keep Marta on her toes.

Part of me worried if it was dishonest. Technically it was blackmail. I wondered if Lorenzo would just prefer to know the truth. But it wasn’t me who had done anything. I was going to leave it, let the universe decide. It was Geli who’d intervened, so maybe that absolved me of any guilt. Anyway, like Geli had said, this way, Lorenzo and Marta got to keep their relationship intact. And surely that was more important to him.

‘I suppose it’s worked out for the best. And your heart was in the right place. You’re a good friend, thank you. Honestly, I don’t know how I would have got through this whole Marta drama without you.’ I gave her a big squeeze. This time, a proper hug. One with conviction and genuine emotion. Not like that confusing embrace with Marta earlier.

‘Okay, okay,’ she said, pulling away. ‘We must not get mooshy. You will have to get used to not having me here. I am leaving.’

‘When?’

‘Next week.’

‘So soon?’ My stomach sank.

‘Sì. That is why I wanted to speak to Marta. To make sure everything was okay before I go.’

‘I appreciate it. I’m really going to miss you, but I understand. You need to get out of here. I’ll be fine. Hopefully, I won’t be far behind you.’

‘I know you will be okay. You are strong woman.’

‘I didn’t feel like that when I first arrived here, but I’ve got my confidence back again. Anyway, where are you going?’

‘Vietnam.’

‘Oh wow! You’ll keep in touch, won’t you?’

‘Sì!You and Roxy will not lose me so easy.’

My eyes widened. I hoped to God Roxy had messaged her back. I didn’t want any awkwardness.

‘Don’t worry. Roxy has message me to explain.’ She read my mind. That’s a relief.‘I know we will see each other again…’ She smirked. I believed her. Something told me those two had unfinished business.

‘Glad to hear it! And wherever Lorenzo, Leo and I move to, you have to come and visit.’

‘I would like that. And you look out for Holly too? After I leave?’

‘Yep. She texted earlier to say she’d be back tomorrow because there’s something she needs to do. I really hope it’s what I think it is…’
