“Yeah. Did you fix the problem with work?”

“I think so. Though I’m starting to think this whole thing isn’t worth the hassle and I should end it.”

“Will that be a problem for the company?”

“No.”

Odd. He seemed so sure, but usually when he talked about business he got upset that he had to run most everything through his father.

He stuffed his phone into his back pocket and came to her. He cupped her face and kissed her softly. “I’m going to miss you tonight.”

“If you run off with a stripper, I’ll kill you.”

His grin made her smile back. “Not a chance. Besides, I have no idea what Gray has planned.”

She didn’t believe the white lie. “Uh-huh. Right. He’d never let you down.”

Everything easy about Marc went hard. His hands dropped away from her face, he took a step back, and glared at her. “What do you mean by that?”

She held her hands out, then let them drop back to her sides. “Nothing. You’re the one who brought up the strippers yesterday. So don’t try to act like that’s not where you’ll be tonight, or that Gray didn’t set up the bachelor party you wanted.”

“Of course he did. Gray doeseverythingright.”

She stared at him, not recognizing the irritation, when he’d always been an easygoing man around her. “Why does that upset you? You’re getting what you want.”

Marc shook off his surly mood and smiled at her. “Sorry. It’s just Gray and I have history.”

“You mentioned as much last night.”

“It’s stupid. Kid stuff. I shouldn’t let those old feelings creep up and ruin our morning.”

“For what it’s worth, he seems really happy for us. He set aside time this week to spend it with you and for our wedding. I know families have their squabbles and grievances, mine is no different, but don’t let the past spoil what should be a very happy week for us.”

“You’re right. I won’t. And I’ll put this work issue I’m dealing with to rest, too, so I can focus all my time and attention on you.”

She took a deep breath and confessed, “It’s a big deal, getting married. We’ve got everything planned for the wedding, so hopefully we can just sit back and enjoy it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not stressful. It’s a big change for both of us.”

“Are you having second thoughts?” The concern in his eyes matched her own that he’d even ask.

“No. Are you?”

“Not at all. I know exactly what I want. And I’m looking at her.”

She sighed and tried to let go of all her worries. “Then it will be you and me standing in front of all our friends and family next Saturday, starting our life together as husband and wife.”

Marc didn’t look as relieved as she hoped, but he did smile and give her another sweet kiss to send her on her way.

Things felt off this morning, but she looked forward to picking up her dress later with Rose. They’d talk. Rose would tell her what she already knew. Everything was okay and her wedding was going to be epic.
