“Want to talk about it?” Taylor asks, her tone soft and kind, just like her as she tucks me in.

Shaking my head I sniffle. “Not really, there isn't much to say.” I admit, as Jade passes me a package of tissues. “This is all I had,” she offers.

“Thank you.”

Blowing my nose, I try to rein in my sobs but it’s no use. A new onslaught of tears pours down my cheeks as the girls each give my hand a squeeze of encouragement. “My dad is fighting for his life and I’m stuck on this ship unable to get to him. I may never see him alive again. God, I have never hurt like this,” I cry. “It fucking sucks. I knew things were going too well for me,” I say, getting it off my chest.

I thought crying was supposed to alleviate some of the devastation coursing through my veins but instead of bringing me comfort, it’s only amplifying the heartache.

Digging through my bag, I pull out a pair of linen shorts and my favorite loose tank. Combing my hair, I throw it back into a ponytail, grimacing when I see my reflection in the mirror. Hearing the news about my dad is evident on every inch of my face - mainly the bags and dark circles under my eyes.

Picking up my phone, I hover over Logan’s name. I want him here with me, but I also just want to cry.He shouldn't be here for that, right? Before I can answer, there’s a knock at the door.

Snapping me to attention, my eyes shift between the girls.

“I texted Logan from the number you called me from this morning,” Taylor offers. “I thought he should be here with you.”

Nodding in agreement, Jade crosses the room to let him in. Opening the door, I barely hear a sound as Logan enters the room. Squeezing my hand one last time, Taylor pushes to her feet as Logan comes into view.

“Hi,” he whispers, the girls moving aside to give him space.

Forcing a smile, I try to reply but nothing comes out.

“I think she’s losing her voice,” Jade explains.

Nodding in understanding, Taylor turns towards me. “We’re just a call away if you need anything,” she offers.

“Doesn’t matter the time,” Jade adds, pausing at the door. “We’re here if you need anything.”

Clearing my throat, I managed to get out a thank you.

Slipping out of the room, Logan and I are left alone. Approaching the bed, the mattress shifts as he sits down beside me.

“I’m sorry, Steph,” he whispers, as I rest my head against his chest.

“Thank you,” I croak.

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

Knowing he means well, I curl into him. “You know what? I think I just need to be still for a little while.”

As if he understood, Logan kicks off his shoes and climbs under the covers with me. Slipping behind me, he wraps his strong arms around me, slowly pulling me into him. “Let's just be still for as long as you need,” he whispers into my ear.

Feeling like my chest is about to explode, I close my eyes and let the tears slowly and painfully spill out of me. Holding me closely, Logan’s breathing was so soothing and comforting that I soon found myself matching its rhythm. Falling into a comfortable slumber, I drift off to sleep.
