“Don’t I know it,” Andre replied.

“You play?” I asked, tipping my chin.

“Nah, my sport is wrestling.” He rubbed his hands together like there was more to it.

Sensing my sudden reserve, Anne Marie spoke up. “But he was also a track star in high school,” she offered.

“Ah. No way. I ran a little track back in the day.”

“Care for a friendly race?” Andre asked, wetting his lips.

“Where’s the fun in that?” We chuckled.

“You guys should work out with us. Anne Marie’s almost done with her set. What do you say we go a few rounds in the ring?” He asked, motioning to the boxing ring, his confidence a little unnerving.

Knowing I was supposed to be taking it easy, I never backed down from a challenge. Glancing at Seth, I knew he thought it wasn’t a good idea long before I accepted, but I couldn’t resist.

“You’re on. Just let us get changed and we’ll meet you back here in a few.”

Leading us towards the changing room, I could already feel the looks Seth sent my way. “You think this is a good idea?” He breathed beside me.

“I’m not fighting with him. We’re just going to spare,” I shrugged.

“I don’t know, Logan. I still think it’s a bad idea. Did you see the size of that guy? He’s at least double your size.”

“He’s one of Stephanie’s friends. What’s the worst that could happen?” I asked, convincing myself.

“I don’t know,” Bradly spoke up. “He really is a big guy. Accidents happen.”

“Come on, guys. It’s just a little friendly sparring.” I reassured them.

“If you say so,” Seth said, shaking his head. “But the moment I think it’s too much, I’m stopping it.”

“Deal,” I said, acknowledging his concern.

???

Heading back into the heart of the gym, we found Andre alone in a zone. Watching the way he moved between machines with quick repetition, maybe Seth was onto something.

Jumping onto the chest press, Andre crunched a rep of at least two-fifty pounds in seconds. Popping off the press, he moved onto the chest curl with another rep of two hundred and fifty pounds.

Shit. This guy’s a beast.

Dropping the weight, he ran his hands through his hair before dropping to the mat for a set of push-ups.

Holy shit.

Where did Anne Marie find this guy?

“Hey,” he tipped his chin. “Thought we could warm up with a few free weights,” he said, motioning towards the weight rack. “What do you bench?” He asked with confidence.

“A buck-fifty.”

Andre nodded with appreciation. “Not bad.”

“Where’d you come from, anyway?” I asked, reaching for the free weights.

“Don’t tell me the pro hockey player is feeling a little intimidated?” Andre snickered.
