I don’t reply. I turn for the closet to find something to throw on and head to the bathroom. A part of my thoughts is still with Ally. I know she’s an adult now, but I still feel like it’s my job to make sure she’s a successful adult.

My mother had such big dreams for the both of us. I may have put my dreams off, but there’s no reason Ally can’t succeed. Other than her ability to land right in the middle of trouble. I’ve fought so many battles to keep her safe.

Sid and I beat down gang members to get my point across. My sister is off-limits. We had to move after that one time, we were all in danger, but for Ally, I’d do it all over again. I know Sid would too.

“Hello,” my brother answers his phone.

“Clay, we need to talk,” I say into the phone as I run a hand through my hair.

“If you’re calling to add one more thing to my plate, I’m hanging up.”

I blow out a breath, feeling bad I’m not there to help him wade through everything that’s going on. My frustration rises. It’s like all this shit is snowballing.

“I don’t want to add anything. I’m just trying to find out what’s going on with Ally. Chloe’s starting to freak out.”

“I’m digging her out of one hole, but another one looks to be opening. This one looks like Cane’s attached. I’ve got it though. Chloe doesn’t have to worry about it.”

“Clay, I’ll give my life for that woman to be happy. If I need to wrap things up here and come back to handle this, you say the word. I’m there.”

“I have this handled. It’s the least of my worries. I’ve been keeping Sid busy and as far away from Ally as I can. I need you focused on those contracts that keep falling through.”

“I’m on it. I swear this has to be coming from somewhere inside. There’s no way it isn’t. Still nothing on where all of this is coming from?”

“No, I’m working every angle. Still nothing, but you’re right, I get the feeling this is an inside job. I’m going to look at everyone on my side. You should have Ethan dig into your teams.”

“I agree. I’ll get him on it.”

I don’t mention that I’ve had Ethan busy with my personal dealings and that’s why he hasn’t already dug into my theory.

“As soon as I connect some dots, I’ll let you know. Don’t worry about the Ally situation. I have that one covered for now.”

“Thanks, Clay.”

“Anytime.”

I hang up and work my jaw. Tension builds between my eyes. I close them and pinch the bridge of my nose. Add to my list trying to keep Chloe from going home to get involved in things over her head.

I know how much she loves her sister. One more hole has been added to this ship. It’s going to sink. And don’t I know it.
