“Ah, yes, he intended to give you time to find someone and fall in love, but you stepped right into the plan as if he’d planned that part himself. When he figured out who she was… I’ve never seen the old man look so triumphant.”

“He played us all.”

I scoff. This all tastes bitter on my tongue. I rub at my chest. I want to be angry, but my feelings are so conflicted.

“I wouldn’t have gone through all this if it weren’t for him. I wanted to be my own man. He almost ripped that from me again,” I say bitterly as I think aloud.

“No, he didn’t. In time, you will see. He’s trying to get something to all of you.”

“And where does that leave you?” Clay asks.

Wade shrugs, his smile falling. “I don’t think it leaves me anywhere. I’m doing what’s asked of me as a son.”

I don’t miss the sad look that comes to Wade’s face. I note it and shove it back for later. Right now, I need to figure out how to keep my wife from taking Cane’s head off and murdering her own sister.

“I’d watch that if I were you,” Clay warns. Then as if reading my thoughts, he turns to Cane. “So are you ready to talk to me about this? I know you’re not using, but you’re involved with someone you have no business being around. Why?” Clay demands.

Cane groans. He releases a deep breath. “I’m guessing you already know she’s my wife.” He’s stating a fact, not asking a question. This is Clay. You have to work hard to hide things from him.

Clayton nods. “Yes, I’m aware. Which is why you have the entire Lost Souls brotherhood at your back. Now that I’m sure you’re not using, I need to know why I’m racking up such a high debt.”

“Where do you want me to start?”

“The beginning,” Clay, Wade, and I grunt in unison.

This should be one of the greatest nights of my life, but I can’t help watching my sister and knowing something is totally off with her.

“Hey, did you hear what I said?” Sid says from beside me.

“No, I’m sorry. Is it me, or is Ally acting stranger than usual?”

“Nope, I picked up on it too. Cane isn’t any better.”

“Yeah, I saw that. With his feign-acting ass.”

“Oh shit. That’s it. I couldn’t put my finger on it. The jittery tics and the way he moves. It’s just like a junkie.”

“Sure is, but they swear he’s not using.”

“You know, those habits do stick. Remember Joseph, freshman year in college? He had a bad coke habit. He kicked it junior year, but he still moved like he was an addict through to graduation.”

“Yeah, I do remember him. He’d look all tweaked out when we had a test or something, especially a pop quiz. So what the fuck is Cane so nervous about?”

“I have no idea. Those two are like little kids trying to steal a snack before bedtime.”

I narrow my eyes and glare at Ally as she stares out of the window. “You know, she’s too smart for her own good.” I look past my sister and catch the person staring at her through the window. “Or maybe she’s not.”

I signal for Ethan and rush for the front door of the gallery. Sidney is right on my heels, grabbing David’s attention. Both men are at my back as I pull up short. My chest heaves as I stand with my fists balled at my sides.

“Fuck,” I hiss.

“What? What just happened?”

I turn to look at Sid. “It’s that Lita chick. It’s the second time I’ve seen her lurking around.”
