Chapter 45

The Past Appears

Chloe

A grin comes to my face as I watch Gregor’s Uncle Devin dance with his wife. They’re showing off with a beautiful two-step routine. The way his wife rolls her body as he steps and shows off in front of her is awe inspiring.

I was a little taken aback when Gregor introduced me to his stern-looking uncle and his fun-looking mocha-skinned wife. She oozes joy. Her tight black dress speaks of her lack of care for others’ opinions.

“They’re amazing, aren’t they?” Gregor murmurs in my ear as he comes up behind me.

“Yes, did your uncle teach you?”

“No, Raven did.” He nods his head toward his uncle’s wife. “It was her way of distracting me from drinking myself to death.”

“I’ll have to thank her. She saved you and she taught you well. You’re almost as good as your uncle,” I tease.

He snorts. “You think so?” He holds his hand out as Ed Sheeran’s “Shiver” comes on. “Let me show you how it’s really done.”

He winks at me, bringing a laugh to my lips. I take his hand and follow him out to the dance floor. It’s our engagement party after all. We should be showing off for our guests.

Gregor pulls me in close and slides his hand down my back. I’ve seen how he’s looked at me in this gold dress. I know it was the one he preferred out of the three I bought.

The gold heels are my favorite. They make my legs look long and my calves toned. Gregor’s black suit and gold tie complement my dress while giving him a regal look.

I can’t stop smiling as we give his aunt and uncle a run for their money. This man is so smooth as he rolls our bodies together before spinning me out to twist and turn with slow fancy footwork, then switching up to faster steps.

I slip under his arm, and he tugs me back to him as he dances us in a small circle. He stops and leans me forward as if he’s going to drop me but pulls me back up quickly. I burst into laughter as he does a half split.

His uncle cuts in and does a few fancy steps with me as Raven and Gregor cut up.

“Oh my God, she’s so good,” I say in awe.

Gregor even seems to step it up a notch. That’s when Uncle Devin gets my attention and I follow his lead as he dips, twists, and guides me around. I surprise myself as I keep up with him.

I’m breathless as Gregor switches off to come back to me. The crowd stands around the dance floor, clapping to the music as we dance. I look into Gregor’s eyes as I smile up at him.

All my worries and concerns are forgotten. I’m in the moment, enjoying myself. I haven’t had this much fun in so long.

This night has been so much more than I thought it would be. I thought it would be stuffy and boring. It has been anything but.

“You’re enjoying yourself. Good. I love that smile,” Gregor says.

“Where’s Chloe?”

“With mom, she passed out. I was thinking we’d leave soon, but I don’t want to miss out on this moment.”

I place my head on his shoulder. “One more dance. This is fun.”

“Anything you want.”

“I Can’t Help Falling In Love with You” by UB40 comes on and it’s the perfect last dance. I gasp.

“Do you remember—” we say in unison.

My cheeks heat. His lids become hooded, and his eyes drop to my lips. “The first time we made love on the balcony.”

“Yes, I remember,” I whisper.
