CHAPTER28

“You’re sure about this?”Beth’s voice echoed in the empty room, grabbing Jonah’s attention from the hallway. He stopped outside the door. “It’s a huge move. You don’t think it’s too soon?”

“It’s not too soon. I love him, Beth.” Lacy’s voice filled his chest.

He moved into the room and came up behind Lacy, wrapping his arms around her waist and hugging her to him.

“Hello, Beth.”

She waved to him on the screen. “Just checking in with my girl.”

“She’s only moving a few blocks and you already know the reception is good there.” He kissed Lacy’s neck as he pulled away.

“I should go. Bye, Beth.” Lacy disconnected the call and turned to face him with her cheeks glowing pink.

“This is it, right?” Jonah went over to the only box left in the room and picked it up, looking over Lacy’s empty room.

A tear slid down her cheek. Jonah set down the box and crossed the room to her.

“What’s wrong, little bird?” He caught the tear with his thumb and then wrapped his arms around her waist.

“I can’t believe I’m leaving this apartment.” She dropped her forehead onto his chest.

It had been two months since Jonah asked her to move in with him. She didn’t want to leave Sophie in a lurch. Even though Jonah had offered every day of it to pay her share of the rent here until they could find another roommate, Lacy had insisted on staying in her apartment. To make sure this really was what Lacy and Jonah wanted.

She’d spent almost every night over at his place or he’d spent the night here. And every night, he reminded her how much he loved her and how much he wanted her. And every morning, he made her coffee.

“Your friends can come over anytime and we have a standing dinner date with both Sophie and Brenda,” he assured her.

Now that it was official she was actually moving, he couldn’t wait to get her home.

“You two better not be having sex in there.” Sophie’s voice travelled closer until she appeared in the doorway. She smiled softly as she caught the tears on Lacy’s face. “Oh, Lacy.”

Brenda popped up behind her. “What’s going on?”

Lacy looked up and tears trailed down her cheeks. “I’m going to miss you guys.”

She slipped out of his arms and went into her friends’ arms. They hugged each other tight.

“The only way I saw you guys was because I was here.” Lacy’s voice was muffled. “Now I won’t see you at all.”

“Nonsense.” Sophie stroked her hand over Lacy’s hair. “We have texting and of course watching any love-related reality TV Netflix show.”

“Yeah, they come out with a new one like every few months.” Brenda looked over at Jonah and winked at him. They had gone to college together and she’d been his friend’s girlfriend. When she’d broken up with his friend, Jonah had stayed friends with Brenda and not the guy. Best decision of his life.

Lacy finally unclenched her friends and walked over to him with a smile as she wiped her eyes. He opened his arms and she stepped into them. God, he never wanted this feeling to end. Every time he held her it was like coming home.

“Do you mind if the girls come hang out tonight?” Lacy played with the ends of his T-shirt and gave him a sly smile.

He smiled down at her. He’d been hoping to break in the new furniture they’d bought. It had been one of the last things Lacy had been waiting for before moving in.

“An early dinner?” he suggested and then leaned down until his mouth touched her ear, whispering, “But dessert alone.”

She gasped as he took her earlobe in his mouth and gently sucked on it. When he lifted his head, her eyes were dark and fathomless. She nodded, not breaking eye contact.

“I love you, Jonah.” She reached up and cupped his face.

“I love you, little bird.” He lowered his mouth to hover over hers. “Always.”
