Page 111 of Not Quite Roommates

She wiped away the stray tear that had managed to escape and sorted herself. Taking a deep breath, she stepped into the apartment. Logan was right. No furniture in the living room or what must be a dining area. It felt really weird, hollow like her chest.

“In here.” Logan’s voice came from the door off the dining room.

Maybe he really was going to kill her. Man, she had awful taste in crushes.

Walking through the living room, she stopped at the entryway to the kitchen. Logan stood at the far end of the island.

“What do you think?” Logan gestured to the kitchen.

The kitchen was big for an apartment and seemed nice enough. Lacy shrugged. “Don’t we need to get going? Where’s your friend?”

Logan smiled and gestured with his head toward her.

“I was hoping we could talk.”

She shut her eyes at the wave of pleasure hearing that gravelly voice brought her. His warmth closed in on her from behind. The lure of his ocean scent surrounded her. She wanted to lean into Jonah, feel his arms wrap around her, but she couldn’t. That wasn’t what they were anymore and never had been in front of anyone else.

She wished Logan wasn’t here because she’d have to pretend for him. Pretend Jonah hadn’t ripped out her heart and left it in ashes. As far as he knew, Jonah and she were coworkers, friends, and roommates.

Taking a deep breath, she opened her eyes.

“I’m going to use the bathroom.” Logan gestured toward a hallway. He patted his stomach and winked. “I might be a while.”

Lacy shifted to the side before turning to look at Jonah. Her heart caught in her throat. His blue eyes focused on her. He appeared tired but also happy. The dumper always had it easier than the dumpee.

Butterflies flew rampant in her stomach and her insides whipped into a hurricane to blow around the dust of her heart.

“What is this?” Lacy moved into the kitchen, needing space from him to clear her head.

“It’s my new apartment.” He stopped on the other side of the island and leaned against the counter.

“Moving out?” she said, softly.

“Thought it was time.” His fingers twitched by his side.

She thought her heart couldn’t hurt anymore, but she’d been wrong. She managed to force a smile onto her face. “That’s great.”

Her stupid heart wanted her to move closer to Jonah, while everything else screamed at her to leave. He didn’t want her anymore, even as a roommate. Her chest ached.

She glanced at where Logan disappeared to. “Are you coming with us tonight?”

Jonah drew his hand over his beard. “I need to talk to you.”

He lifted his gaze to her. Her pulse was chaotic. She couldn’t say anything. She shrugged, but she couldn’t tear her gaze from his eyes.

“You asked me once if I had a home.” He seemed to want her to confirm this.

She swallowed and nodded.

“I got to see my dad while I was in L.A. wrapping up some things.” His gaze didn’t waver. “He reminded me while we moved a lot, we always had a home, because we had our family. When my mom died, our family didn’t seem as cohesive as it used to.”

Her heart stopped for a second at the thought of Jonah losing his mother. He didn’t pause though.

“As a kid, I didn’t like moving around, liked it even less as a teenager, but then fell into a job that kept me moving. Never letting me settle.”

Lacy shifted nervously. What if Logan came back in? What if he realized Jonah and Lacy had been more than just roommates and coworkers? “You don’t have to—”

Jonah stepped closer. “Something has always been missing. Even more so after my mom passed. It wasn’t just boredom that made me take a job that would keep me in one place.”
