The "twat" makes a petulant face, then stalks away with his mates trailing after him. The crowd disperses quickly now that the excitement has ended.

Alex takes my hand, holding it more firmly than usual. "Are you all right, love?"

"I'm fine. You know how to handle a scunner. I'm impressed."

He winces the slightest bit. "It's a skill I learned out of necessity."

I want to ask him what that means, but he doesn't like to discuss his past. Am I a fool for not demanding he tell me everything? Maybe that's why I've never told my family about Alex. Sometimes I wonder if, deep down, I know our relationship won't last forever.

The next day, Alex drives me to the airport and kisses me goodbye. Aye, I'll miss him.

As for how long we might last… I'll think about that another time.
