CHAPTERTWENTY-SIX

ETHAN

Icrawled among the tombstones on the cemetery field, trying to avoid the bullets and concrete fragments being thrown around. I took cover behind another monument, panting and attempting to catch my breath. Another round of gunshots could be heard a split second later, but they were not aimed at me.

My men had open fired on the SUVs.

I rushed out and ran to get a better shooting position when I saw two men jump out of their cars. It was the Brooke Twins, Robinson's righthand men and assassins. They open fired on me, but I kept moving.

I'd heard stories about them; they werequick with a gun. I fantasized about showing them what bloodshed meant before becoming a don. It was similar to what I had been thinking about the night before.

When they lost sight of me, the twins stopped shooting. I tried to peer behind the tree behind which I was hiding, andI could still see them approaching me. Beyond the tree was an open field of much shorter tombstones.

Think, think, think, I pressuredmyself. I had told Tristan to corner them because they were valuable members of the Robinson Mafia family. Unfortunately, I was currently alone.

I noticed a freshly dug grave to my left. It was in the shade of a tree, almost invisible to an unaccustomed eye to the lack of sunlight.

Shit, I cursed under my breath as I crawled into it to await the twins.

I had my pistols pointed skyward, ready to fire at the slightest movement of their heads. As I waited for them, my heart pounded in my chest. I'd killed before and never thought twice about it, but I had doubts that morning while lying there in the dirt.

I must be safe. She's waiting for me, I thought first.

I must be safe, I decided, my hands steady as I listened and waited. There was still a gunfight going on in the distance between my men and the Robinson soldiers. I was impatient, wanting to get out of this hole and assist my men.

"Where could he have gone to?" I heard a voice nearby.

They're almost here.

"Upthe tree?" the second brother responded.

"There's no one up there," the other said.

Their voices were close, and I knew they were approaching me. I pointed with my pistols in front of me. Given the tree's shadow, I knew I'd see them before they would see me.

I opened fire on the two of them as soon as I saw a glimpse of their heads. I jumped to my feet right away to finish them off.

One of the Brooke Twins was dead beneath the tree, while the other fled, limping away from me. He was badly injured and bleeding profusely.

To be sure, I emptied my left magazine into the dead twin, rattling his brother who was on the run. I pursued himwith a grin on my face and a familiar rush.

I quickly caught up with him. When he saw me, he rushed forward, taking my shot away from me. The tombstones hid him, but they were too low, so I waited for him.

Suddenly, he fired at me, but he missed because he couldn't see well.

"You're dead,Levine!" he yelled as he sat up to get a better look at me.

I took the first shot. I got up from my crouched position after the bullet went right between his eyes. My arms ached from all the recoils they had taken. But I had to keep going. The primary target was me. The war was not over as long as I was alive.

So I dashed toward the battle.

I could see the car from where I was, but I couldn't see Tristan or Ryan. As I got closer to the road, I heard the roar of a gun followed by the screech of a moving SUV. I immediately ducked for cover because the car was riddled with bullets.

My pistols did not hold enough bullets to help me escape or put my enemies down.

The tommy gun! Tristan was supposed to bring it to me.

I returned to the car and opened the door to the backseat. The gun sat idle inside. I took it and slid into the driver's seat. The car key was still in the ignition, as it should have been. I was supposed to flee as soon as the fight began. But I couldn't go just yet.
