CHAPTERTWENTY-TWO

VANESSA

The next morning, I awoke with a smile on my face. There had been no pause that morning to reflect on the events of the previous night. I could feel it just as much as I could recall every detail of it.

In bed, I rubbed my thighs together and kneaded my toes together. My body felt warm and fuzzy from all the sex—the lovemaking I felt we did. Ethan's words played over and over in my head. He wantedme.

The thought made me blush once more, and I knew I had to get out of bed and do something, anything. I knew if I didn't, I'd spend the rest of the day in bed, reliving the night before.

"What to do? What to do?" I muttered. I paced around the bed, looking for an answer to my predicament.

I wonderif Ethan is awake or if he has to rush somewhere this morning. Is he still in pain?I wondered as I looked at the door.

I had a strong desire to see Ethan, perhaps even kiss him awake, but I knew I needed an excuse if things didn't go as planned or if any of his guards got in my way.

The Eiffel Tower wall clock in the room indicatedthe maid would be there in about an hour with breakfast. I assumed Ethan would be woken up around the same time. So, before heading out the door, I put on a pair of jogger pants—"indoor” clothing that Ethan had purchased for me—and a large t-shirt.

The fact that there were more men in the house that morning bothered me at first, but the less familiar men treated me with the same respect as the regulars. So I took a deep breath and entered the kitchen. The cook had not begun preparing breakfast, as I had suspected.

"Good morning," I said to the woman.

"Good morning, miss," she said courteously.

"You don't need to makebreakfast for your boss today. I'll take care of it,"I informed her.

Despite her smile, I noticed her shake her head. "Miss, I'm afraid I can't let you do that. Every day, I make breakfast for the boss. It is my job, and I cannot simply delegate it to you because you request it,"she said, turning her back on me. "This is something I get paid to do."

"There is no problem. I guarantee you will not lose your job," I tried to persuade her, but she refused to listen.

Why are you trying to spoil my surprise?I wanted to grab her and shake her, but I kept my cool. I convinced myself that the woman was simply doing her job.

She donned an apron and approached the sink with an empty pot. I went to see her.

"Mr. Tristan will be furious if I abandon my post," the cook warned me.

Oh, I see now. I smirked and thought. I stopped myself when I noticed the cook staring at me awkwardly.

"Please, give me a moment," I said, turning away to find Tristan when I noticed him at the door behind me. He had a scowl on his face as he looked at the two of us. He was as bruised as Ethan, if not more so, but he hid it well on his broad shoulders.

Despite the fact that I expected Tristan and I to be better acquainted after the previous night's events, he still frowned. And I quickly realized it wasn't a personal issue. He was the same way with everyone else.

"Good morning," I said boldly.

"Good morning," he replied.

"So, when I woke up this morning, I decided to make breakfast for your boss to thank him for saving my life last night. The cook claims she will not let me because she is afraid of you,"I told him.

Tristan's gaze shifted from me to the terrified cook, then back to me. "You should fear her more than you should fear me around here," he said as he walked away.

It took me a while to realize he was joking with me. I gradually felt more at ease in Ethan's home. There were some crowds, but no one bothered me. They left me alone.

The cook stepped aside, allowing me to prepare breakfast. It was similar to how my mother used to do it when I was younger. Everything in moderation. I cooked pancakes and fried some steak... By the time I was finished, a large tray was required to transport it to his bedroom.

"Let me help you with that," one of the men said as I emerged from the kitchen.

I let him helpand went up the stairs to Ethan's room. I then took the tray backand knocked twice before Ethan answered the door.

I entered the room and found himon the bed, staring at me. When he saw me, his face lit up.
