CHAPTERSIX

VANESSA

When he grabbed me, I thought I was dead. Even though he smiled, his grip on my hand was firm and rough. I immediately regretted my decision, wondering why I had been so rash in the first place. He was much bigger than I was, and there were armed men all around us who could shoot me, my uncle, and Anna in an instant.

He raised my hand and looked into my eyes, as if looking for something within them. I didn't have the strength to frown or rebuff him at the time. My entire strength was expended in that single move to harm him.

He opened his mouth to speak to me before abruptly closing it again, a wicked smile on his face. Ethan shifted his gaze away from me and back to my uncle.

No, please, look at me, I wanted to beg him, but I knew I'd ruined any chance of him listening after I tried to kill him.

"I know how to punish you, Fred; death is too easy for a man like you," he told my uncle.

Ethan's words gave me both a little comfort and a massive amount ofdread. He wasn't going to kill my uncle anymore, but his expression indicated that he had something more sinister in mind.

What could be worse than death?I had a hard time coming up with anything.

I followed his staring eyes back at me, and it suddenly clicked: he wantedme.

"I'll takeyour lovely niece overhere. That should be enough to make you suffer. Sounds fair?" Even my uncle and I knew thatwasn't a question.

"Please, no!" my uncle yelled as he struggled to his feet, trying to attack him. Ethan didn't even flinch. He was unfazed, as if nothing could persuade him otherwise, which terrified me even more.

One of Ethan's men rushed between him and my uncle, pressing a pistol against Uncle Fred's chest.

"No, uncle," I begged him to stop lest he got killed.

"Ethan, this has nothing to do with her. Take me, kill me."I couldn't make much sense of my uncle's feud with the Mafia, but it was clear he had done something to Ethan's family. I doubted my uncle could everhurt anyone, but that didn't matter now. I just wanted him to be alive andsafe.

"If you die, Fred, I'll have no reason to keep her alive," Ethan said before handing me over to one of his men. The man grabbed my arm and dragged me to the front door.

"You don't have to do this," I begged, but Ethan was unyielding.

He didn't even look at me, preferring to remain a little behind, close to my uncle.

"Bastard!" I spit venom at him, but all it did was make Ethan smile. I despised him, but he didn't seem to mind. It amused him, which siphoned my rage and made me want to scream.

"She's far too loud. Keep her quiet,” Ethan responded dismissively.

Another man approached with his gun drawn, while the other man restrained me. Despite the fact that fighting these brick walls for men was pointless, I persisted.

I tried to look at Uncle Fred, back on his knees andglaring at Ethan who had taken delight in his rage. "If you call the cops, she dies," he threatened him.

"What about her?" I askedabout Anna, fearingthey would kill her. She continued to cry, but her lungs were too weak to produce any sound.

Ethan appeared skeptical, as if he had to choose between his favorite burgers rather than a human being's life. "Keep her quiet as well," he concluded.

I watched as Anna was clubbed behind the head before collapsing into the arms of the man holding her. I fought harder, but in vain, to free myself and avoid becoming as vulnerable as Anna was. But then I felt a blow to the temple, and the room went dark. A darkness that seemed to last forever…

When I awoke, I found myself in an unknown room. My eyes, however, were too tired and shut down from the sudden exposure to the bright white lights. I turned to my side to shield my eyes and noticed a wardrobe. I was in someone'sbedroom.

Last I remembered, I wasat my uncle's house, surrounded by suited men and Ethan. Uncle Fred! The thought of him jolted me to my feet. I had to find out what had happened to him. My memory was too foggy to recall the specifics.

Ethan was a twisted bastard that had decided against killing my uncle because he found more pleasure in taking me. I didn't know how long I'd been unconscious, and it worried me that Ethan might have changed his mind and killed my uncle after all.

I dashed over to the large door and tried to pull it. It was locked, as expected.I slumped against it, exhausted, wondering what had gone wrong. My life had been quite uneventful and simple just a few days before. It was divided into three sections: business school, TheRose, and some uncomfortable outingswithAnna toafew of the wild parties she liked to attend. I never imagined that I would be kidnapped by mobsters.
