Ally

Iwake in the middle of the night clutching my stomach as a horrendous pain stabs at my insides. Sweat breaks out on my forehead and a wave of dizziness tries to pull me back under.

“Ally, baby, what’s wrong?” Trent asks sleepily while getting to his elbow to hover over me from behind.

“I don’t know.” I pant out the words. “My stomach—” I bite my tongue to keep from crying out when it feels like something sharp is scraping across my insides.

The light flicks on, momentarily blinding me. I crack my eyes open and meet Trent’s worried gaze. Turning my head away, I bury my face into the pillow and try to curl my legs tighter against my abdomen when another pain comes.

The mattress moves and cool air hits my back as Trent gets out of bed.

“Shit, Ally.”

At Trent’s croaked tone, I lift my head from the pillow, finding his face pale as he looks at the mattress. Biting back a sob from the pain, I roll to my back and try to find what he’s looking at. It only takes me a second to notice the blood coating the sheets and my sleep shorts.

“Trent?” My voice trembles and tears immediately fill my eyes.

He blinks several times, which seems to bring him out of his daze, and he springs to action. Pulling the covers off the bed, he tosses them to the floor at the end. His eyes meet mine as he walks around to my side of the bed and bends down so his face is close to mine.

“I’ll be right back. I’m taking you to the hospital.”

He’s gone before I can say anything, walking out of the room. He comes back a moment later carrying a lightweight blanket. Ashlyn and Dillon follow him into the room. Ashlyn’s hand flies to her mouth when she sees the blood.

“Oh my God.”

Tears leak down my cheeks, and I tense when another wave of pain spasms through me. I can’t hold back my whimper.

“What do you need from us?” Dillon asks as Trent carefully wraps the blanket around me and picks me up from the bed.

“Grab my truck keys from the dresser,” he answers on a grunt. “And open the front door.”

I hear the jangle of keys as Trent carries me down the hallway. The night air cools my fevered flesh when we step outside. I bury my face in Trent’s neck, unable to stop the low cries slipping past my lips.

“I’m going to drive them to the hospital.”

I barely register Dillon’s voice, too focused on the fear coursing through me and the pain that feels like it’s ripping me apart from the inside.

A moment later, with me still in his arms, Trent climbs into the back seat of his truck. He carefully situates me so I’m sitting sideways on his lap. Seconds later, I feel movement as Dillon backs out of the driveway.

When a small reprieve from the pain comes, I tilt my head back enough that I can see Trent’s face in the lights we’re whizzing past and ask in a low voice, “What’s happening?”

He looks down, the anguish so sharp in his eyes, it almost makes the pain in my stomach pale in comparison.

He doesn’t have an answer for me, but I don’t need one.

We both know what we’re losing.

I bury my face back into his neck and let all my tears soak his shirt. Minutes later, darkness claims me.

I wake sometime later, the smell of antiseptic wrinkling my nose. I open my eyes to the bright glare of florescent lights in the room.

“Ally?”

I look over, finding Trent standing by the bed. Seeing the devastation on his face, I know it wasn’t a dream.
