“I’m glad this is settled,” I admit. A weight from the past few days lifts off my chest.

“It’ll be good.” Her voice catches on the last word as she fights back a sniffle. “Sorry,” she mutters.

“Hey. Look at me.”

The overhead chandelier shimmers off the water collecting on her lower lids. “This will be good. The doctor said you needed rest, and this way, I can take some of the load off.”

Her hand flutters between us. “I know. You’re right. Thank you,” she emphasizes the last part.

“I should really be thanking you. I’m happy to be here for you both in any way I can.”

“I have one more ask. If it isn’t too much.” Her hesitance to reach out punches me square in the chest. I push back from the counter and straighten.

“What is it?”

“Our stuff is at Evie’s.”

My keys jangle as I snatch them from the island. “I’ll follow you there.”
