He laughed, showing more of those perfect teeth.

But then a more serious expression took hold of his features, like he wanted to say something that wasn’t funny or light-hearted in the least.

“So,” he said. “Shania…”

Oh man. Was this it? Was he about to actually bring up our history? What other thing could he possibly be this serious about?

“Yeah, Sean?” The slight buzz from the wine and the whirl of emotions inside of me blended together to make me feel…shit, I couldn’t even describe it. Strange.

“There’s something I’ve been meaning to talk to you about. Especially over these last few days.”

He was going to do it. Sean Maddox was really going to think about my feelings, bring them up and try to make amends.

I turned my body to his, my eyes wide with anticipation.

“What is it?”

He bit his lower lip for a moment and let out a sigh, one that seemed to suggest he was really gearing himself up for this. Then he snapped those brown eyes onto mine and spoke. “I…”

I think I might’ve even been leaning forward in anticipation.

“I…,” he went on. “I’m not embarrassed that you saw my dick.”

Oh.

The serious expression vanished, replaced with one of total screwing around. He let out a laugh before glancing over at me with kind of a worried expression on his face. “You OK over there?”

“Fine. Wasn’t sure what you were going to say, is all.” Even though I was more than a little peeved, the tension in my gut did melt.

“You looked like you were worried I was going to tell you that you only had six months to live or something.”

“I mean, you looked so serious.”

“I’m only screwing around. But, I mean, I’m being serious. We talked about it before a little, but I want you to know that I’m not feeling any weirdness about anything. And I wanted to check in to make sure you felt the same way.”

It was a good question, and I had to give him some credit for asking.

“I’m…fine. But it’s still strange having you back in my life like this. You know, us actually talking.”

“Well. It’d been a while since we’d seen each other, and neither of us was really sure how to handle it.”

It. I had a feeling that was as close as he was going to come to mentioning what had happened between us unless I wanted to go ahead and bring the damn thing up.

“But there’s something else. Something I’m less sure how you’re going to react to.”

“What’s that?”

“After seeing you again, and after having you over in the hot tub…I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.”

A rush of heat ran through me. He turned his body to me, the distance between us closing by a few inches.

“What about you? Have I been on your mind as much as you’ve been on mine?”

I knew I could’ve lied, told him that no, I hadn’t, and more than that, he had some major balls to be bringing up such things.

But I didn’t.

“You…have. As much as I hate to admit it, you have.”

“Especially after what almost happened in the hot tub.”

The mere mention of it was enough to bring me back to the moment. For a brief, wonderful few seconds…I was there. The hot water so relaxing, the view perfect, and me and Sean’s lips moving closer and closer and closer together, until…

We were interrupted.

What would’ve happened with Sean and I if our friends hadn’t shown up?

Maybe what could happen between us right then.

Bad idea. No good, very bad idea.

But, of course, right at the moment I was trying to use my brain to talk myself out of what my pussy was trying to talk me into, Sean spoke.

“We never got to finish that conversation. Now that I think about it.” He said nothing after that, his eyes lingering on mine.

Shit. I knew exactly what he was thinking. And the worst part was…I wasn’t totally against it. In fact, I really, really wanted it.

What was wrong with me? I should’ve been pissed at this guy, should’ve been laying out in clear, concise terms that not only were things going to be platonic, but that I really needed an explanation for the other shit he’d pulled.

That’s what I should’ve done. But I didn’t.

Instead, I stood there like a dumbstruck girl while his handsome face moved closer and closer and closer to mine.

“Wait!” I stopped him right before his lips touched mine.

“What’s up?”

“I know we’re thinking the same thing.”

He answered my statement with a sly smile.

I went on. “And…I’m not going to lie—I want to.”

“I like that answer.”

I raised a finger between us—one important thing! “But if we do it, it happens once. That’s it. No regular thing, no sexts or whatever—one and done. Got it?”

“I got it. In fact, it’s probably better that way.”
