‘I couldn’t have done it without you, darling.’
‘I love my time at home with Matty. It’s the best possible way to raise a child. I thank God every day that we are lucky enough to be able to do it.’
Coral nodded. ‘Me too. I better call Mum later. Check how she’s getting on with this new gallery. It seems to be going well.’
‘I called her yesterday. She’s fine.’
Coral smiled. He was so good, so attentive—to her and the baby and to her mother, too.
‘You’re really not interested in the rumour, then?’
Raffa had put Matty on the floor and was holding his hand as he toddled backwards and forwards.
‘If it’s another story about Salvatore trying to start another cruise company, I think I’ve heard them all.’
‘No, we both know that his walking away from Argento with that enormous pay-off and then having to hand it straight over to Kyla was the best example of karma ever. She won’t let him near a negotiating table again, that’s for sure.’
Coral put down her napkin and pushed back her chair.
‘I’m going to have to come right out with it then, am I?’
Raffa scooped Matty up into his arms, smiling at his squeals of delight.
‘No,’ he said, walking towards her.
With one arm he held Matty tight against his chest, and with the other he drew Coral in beside him, nestling the three of them together. He was beaming at her, his blue eyes sparkling like the sea in high summer.
‘I already know the rumour. You’re pregnant. I can see it in your eyes. They’re dancing. Full of life. Just like the last time.’
She pulled back, astonished.
‘You are, aren’t you?’
‘I can’t hide a thing from you, can I?’
‘Nothing. And this time I’m going to be here for you every step of the way.’
Raffa put Matty back in the high chair, strapped him in, and while their infant son guzzled another piece of toast he took his wife in his arms and kissed her.
He kissed her with love, and Coral knew that no matter what happened they had each other. They would raise their family and grow old and grey together, growing happier by the day.
