Chapter Five
Making her way downstairs, Hope hummed to herself, happy for the first time since her father took everything away from her. Entering the dining room table, she stopped when she saw Dwayne, Caleb, and Beast all sitting there.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize I was late.” She quickly glanced at her wrist to see she was right on time.
“I’m hungry,” Beast said.
“Please take a seat.”
Caleb sat opposite Beast at one end of the table. With Dwayne on one side, she went to the only place that was set, taking a seat.
It had been a long time since she’d shared a dinner with anyone. Her mother always made sure there was a meal on the table, and it brought a smile to her face thinking about it.
“You’ve got a math test next week. How are your scores?” Beast asked, looking directly at Dwayne.
“If I remember everything that Hope’s taught me, I should ace it.”
She smiled. “Don’t stress out, and look out for those trick questions. The ones that make you think well, duh that’s right, but when you look at it again, you just know it’s something else.” She frowned. “I’ve just made that sound way more complicated.”
“It’s fine. I’ll probably fail,” Dwayne said. “Useless tutor.”
He was smiling as he said it.
“Hey, that’s not fair. You know I’ve got one of the highest successes as a tutor.”
“Yeah, we’ll see, hot-shot.”
She giggled. The food came out, and out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Beast staring at her. She liked that, having his gaze on her, which of course made her think of that damn book. Why would he have that kind of book anyway?
“Did you have a good day?” she asked, finally chancing a glance over to him.
“It was a good day. I think I finally taught someone the error of his ways.”
She heard Caleb snort, and she glanced down the table to see him trying to contain his laughter. Dwayne, of course, chewed his food and stared at his uncle. Something was going on here, and she didn’t think for a second she’d like whatever kind of secrets they were hiding.
For the rest of the dinner, she stayed silent, not wanting to ask questions. The rumors about the Carson family kept ringing around her head. He had so much security, and every time she walked into a room, conversation between the men always seemed to stop.
After dinner, she made her way to her room, taking a quick shower and changing into pajamas. Sitting on her bed, she stared at her books but couldn’t find the energy to study, even though that was all she did.
She was curious about that damn book.
Climbing off the bed, she made her way down the flights of stairs and entered the library. She flicked the switch for the second floor of lights and climbed the stairs, finding the book once again.
She stared at the spine and gritted her teeth.
