I looked in the mirror. I had put on a dress for the first time in months, and I had pulled back my hair. I put on low heels and walked to the nursery again.

“You look beautiful,” Brett said when he saw me. Josie had arrived, and I said hello to her before Brett and I left.

“Where are we going?” I asked Brett when he turned in the opposite direction of the restaurant.

“I wanted to show you something.”

Brett drove through the city for a while before he stopped in front of a building I didn’t recognize.

“What is this?” I asked.

“Just trust me.”

I wasn’t sure what was going on, but Brett leaned over and kissed me before we climbed out of the car. He took my hand and led me into the building, unlocking the front door with his keys.

When he flicked on the lights, the building was raw and empty.

“Where are we?” I asked.

“We’re in the building where you’re going to work in from now on.”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I mean you’re going to start a makeup or fashion house, and you are going to run it from here. The warehouse next door is also yours, and the moment you need a factory, I’m on it.”

I stared at Brett. “How did you know?”

I’d had a dream about owning a makeup or fashion house for the longest time, but very few people knew about it. I had started as an EA after I had studied so that I could put money away. When everything had gone wrong with Daniel, I had kissed that dream goodbye, and since then, everything had blown up. I hadn’t thought I would ever be able to do this.

But here I was standing in a building my husband-to-be had bought me, which would become my own business.

“Your mom mentioned something about it when I went to speak to her all those months ago.”

I looked around. “I don’t even know if I’m going to be able to make this work. We have six babies at home. Do you think I’ll be able to?”

“I think you can do anything you set your mind to,” Brett said. “We have your mom and Josie, and we have more than enough money to make it work. Whatever you need, we’ll have it. I want you to be happy.”

I turned around and threw my arms around Brett’s neck, kissing him. “I am happy.”

I was more than happy. Everything was perfect. My life hadn’t gone in the direction I had planned, and at first, I had thought that everything was blowing up in my face. But even with a little detour, I was still going to end up where I had wanted to be, and this time I had Brett and my six beautiful babies at my side. Everything was better than I could ever have imagined it.

“Let’s go,” Brett said. “Our reservation is for eight.”

We walked out of the building hand in hand.

“How is the wedding coming along?” Brett asked when we drove to the restaurant.

“I think it’s coming along well. Janine really knows what she’s doing. I like her.”

“I’m glad,” Brett said.

At first when we had decided to get married after the babies were born, I had wanted to do something small. Maybe even go to court and get married there. But Brett had insisted we make a big deal of it. We were in love, and he wanted us to celebrate the right way. So he had sent me a handful of wedding planners to choose from, and I had interviewed them until I had chosen Janine as the woman who would make my big day come true.

“Thank you,” I said.

“For what?”

Where could I start? “For my own company and the building. And for being so great about everything. For being there for me all the way through no matter how difficult things get. For loving me.”

“Loving you is so easy,” Brett said. “As for everything else, I want to give you the world.”

“I’m so glad we’re getting married.” I was getting emotional again. During the pregnancy I had cried about everything. But this was different. I was overcome with emotions.

“I’m also glad we’re getting married,” Brett said. “You’re an amazing woman, Erica. It’s a privilege to have you in my life.”

He reached for my hand, held it, and we drove like that to the restaurant.

When I had walked into the offices that first day for the interview with Brett, I had been sure I wouldn’t get the job. There had been women in the waiting room with me more beautiful and more polished than I was, and I’d had a big black mark on my name after Daniel had fired me. I had gotten the job anyway, and since then, everything was different. Now I didn’t only have a wonderful boss, but I had a caring, loving partner, six beautiful children, a mother who supported us in everything we did, and I was going to move forward as the business owner I had always wanted to be.
