“Of course,” she said. “I’m so excited to be a grandma. This is a big deal, sweetheart. I’m going to spoil your little one rotten.”

Brett smiled as he watched the two of us talking about the pregnancy.

“I’m still a little worried about how the public will react once this comes out,” I admitted. “It’s easier now that our relationship is out there, but a pregnancy is a different story.”

“I don’t think there will be repercussions,” Brett said. “After everything is said and done, we’re still not celebrities, only famous in the business world. The world will move on and find other interests. It was a novelty, but it will wear off.”

I hoped he was right.

“And if it is a problem,” my mom chipped in, “we’ll deal with it. We can get through this. If I could raise you alone and get through the worst without any help, how much better will it be when you have so many people on your side?”

She was right. We could get through it all as long as we stuck together. I was incredibly lucky that everything was going so well. Brett was a good man, and my mom was suddenly on board with everything. I still wasn’t sure how it had happened, but somehow, everything had worked out well in the end.

After dinner, we had coffee together and then my mom got ready to leave. She hugged me.

“I love you, sweetie. Never forget that,” she said.

Then she turned to Brett and hugged him too. I never thought I would see the day where my mom would not only accept a man, but where she would also be this happy with everything that was happening.

After my mom left and Brett came back from seeing her off at the elevator, he grinned at me.

“Tonight was a success, I think,” he said.

“It was so much more than just a success,” I answered. “I don’t know how you did it, but my mom actually likes you. She doesn’t like anyone if they’re male.”

Brett pulled up his shoulders. “What can I say? I’m a lovable guy.”

I laughed. “You are.” We walked to the living room hand in hand and sat down on the couch together. “How did you do it, though?”

“I went to see her,” Brett said simply.

“Where did you get her address?”

“Katie gave it to me.”

I frowned. “You could have asked me for it.”

Bret shook his head. “You wouldn’t have given it to me. You were angry. You would have told me that it was pointless because your mom would never change, and I wouldn’t have been able to prove you wrong.”

“Well, you proved me wrong.” I was still in awe that it had worked out so well. “What did you say to her?”

“I told her the truth. I told her I love you and I wasn’t going to leave you. I told her that I was going to stick around, and I would make sure you had your job no matter what. That’s what she was worried about, after all.”

I nodded. It was exactly what my mom was worried about. After my dad had left, my mom had struggled financially, and it had been hard for her to be a single mother and make ends meet. She had struggled through most of the years I had lived at home, but she had never allowed me to work. She had wanted me to study and make a better life instead. Despite being pregnant now, I was still going to do what she had always wanted me to do.

“I can’t believe where we are,” I said. “I can’t believe how much has happened in such a short time.”

Brett nodded. “This isn’t the direction I thought my life would go. But now that we’re here, I’m so happy. I hope you know that.”

I nodded. “I know. I was unsure when I told you about the baby, but now, after tonight, everything is different. I get it now.”

“Good.” He put his hands on my cheeks—something he loved to do—and kissed me.

The kiss very quickly turned into something more passionate. It was always like that with Brett. No matter what we were going through, no matter how difficult things became or what mood we were in, when Brett and I kissed, it was like nothing else mattered but the two of us.

Sexual tension built between us, and the air was thick with desire. Brett’s lips had become familiar on mine, and when he kissed me, all was right with the world.
