CHAPTER 12

CARINA

This might sound weird, but getting evicted was the best thing to happen to me since I got the nanny job. Not only was I free of my two disgusting roommates, whom I’d found through an online ad (that should’ve been the first red flag), but I was now living in one of the nicest houses I’d ever seen. It was temporary, but that was okay.

Most importantly, my eviction was the kick in the ass I needed to get my shit together.

Coming home to a flooded flat really put things into perspective. I’d been lucky enough to save most of my belongings, but everything I owned could’ve been gone, just like that. The scariest part was, not a single loss would’ve devastated me.

Financially, it would’ve sucked. Emotionally? I would’ve been fine. Clothes and makeup could be replaced. My photos were backed up on my computer. There were a few gifts I would’ve been sad to lose, but I didn’t have a single unique item that I loved enough to cry over.

And wasn’t that a metaphor for my life? I was bobbing from day to day, content but unfulfilled. I’d let the waves take me where they wanted instead of steering the wheel myself.
