“I thought I could survive it,” she said. “Charm had already lost Charlie. She was carrying so much guilt and pressure. I believed if the worst of Lance’s anger landed on me, she would remain safe.”
“You thought letting him hit you protected her?”
“I know how it sounds.”
“It sounds like you taught your daughter that loving someone means disappearing quietly so everybody else remains comfortable.”
Crystal recoiled.
I kept going because she came out here for truth and I had never been skilled at giving anyone a decorative version.
“You standing between his fist and Charm didn’t make that house safe. She watched her mother survive by becoming smaller. She watched you protect a man who hurt you and learned silence was what women did when speaking became dangerous.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.”
Her voice broke hard enough to stop me.
Crystal pressed one hand against her mouth before forcing it back down. Tears gathered beneath her eyes, but she didn’t look away.
“I know because Charm has spent the last fifteen months making me look at it,” she said. “Therapy made both of us look at it. Every time I thought I had done something to protect her, she showed me what it taught her instead. I thought staying kept our family together. She showed me that staying taught her love required endurance. I thought smoothing things over kept peace. She showed me that silence taught her no one would stand beside her once Lance became angry.”
The fight inside me shifted.
Crystal wiped beneath one eye. “Then I found out what he did to you.”
I said nothing.
“He took photographs of Charm when she was sick. He took pieces of her life that should have remained private and handed them to strangers because he wanted them to believe you hurt her. He convinced himself destroying your career was protecting his daughter.”
“He wanted me to become the man he had already decided I was.”
“Yes.”
“And you still stayed.”
“For a while.”
I looked at her.
Crystal drew an uneven breath. “I’m leaving him.”
The words settled between us. “When?”
“After the wedding.”
“Why wait?”
“Because I’m doing it safely. I’ve spoken to an attorney. Important documents are somewhere Lance cannot reach them. I have somewhere to stay, and I need him away from the house long enough to take what matters without creating another confrontation.”
“Who knows?”
“Charm, Elenore and Becky know everything. Bliss and Aura know as well. Cade, Daniel and his boys as well as Ray and Harrison know enough to help.” She glances inside, “Easton I am assuming.”
I studied her face. This wasn’t impulsive, she had a plan. “If he touches you again before you leave, you call the police.”
