His heartbeat was a steady, slow thump against my ear, and it was like hearing it trained mine to slow its frantic hammering.

Cain’s hands moved casually up and down my back, calming my frazzled nerves until I no longer felt like I was buzzing.

“Starting to feel better?” he asked, seeming to sense the relaxation.

“Yeah.”

“We should stay like this for a little longer just to make sure.”

I wasn’t about to object to that.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Cain

I had my suspicions, of course, about that douchebag’s treatment of Georgie.

One glance at the wide-eyed, frantic look on her face as she stood just inside the clubhouse told me all I needed to know.

But that band on her wrist started to form not long after.

Let’s just say it was one thing to suspect something and a complete other to see the evidence of it.

And there was nothing worse than a man who used his strength against someone weaker than him.

While I was disgusted that he’d grabbed her on the street and put his hands on her in the past, I guess I could be relieved that she’d only endured that once.

But if that was the final straw, what were all the others? Clearly, the man had been abusive to her in other ways if she was so upset by one interaction with him.

“You alright?” I asked after a solid twenty minutes of her only relaxing more with each passing moment, when she jumped hard.

“I need to call my lawyer and explain what happened.”

“If you want privacy, you can go into the hall or bathroom. I can wait here for more emotional support.”

She shot me a shy smile before climbing over me and off the bed, grabbing her phone, and walking into the bathroom.

I could hear the soft lilt of her voice but couldn’t make out the words until she thanked the guy and told him goodbye.

“All settled?” I asked as she made her way back in.

“Yeah. He was probably angrier than I am about the whole thing,” she said, setting her phone on the nightstand, then climbing over me to get onto the bed.

I just barely managed to hold back from dragging her to straddle me, to rock my hips up into her until she was writhing and moaning like she had in her room at the motel.

It wasn’t the time to expect anything from her. Even if all I was expecting was to make her feel good.

She needed comfort and the kind of softness that she could only find in a good man who she trusted would never put an angry or selfish hand on her.

So she moved back against my chest, letting out a sweet sigh as my arm hooked around her and my other hand went to her head so my fingers could massage her scalp.

She was gooey in my arms.

Which was just what she needed after that run-in with her ex.

“What’s all that?” she asked when there was a lot of clanking and banging and talking going on in the common area.

“Best guess… a party is starting.”
