Cain

“Popular spot, huh?” I asked when Cain sighed.

“Anytime there are some new girls at the club, someone wants to take her up here.”

“Is that everyone’s move?” I asked, deflating a little. Because it’d worked on me.

Cain glanced over, watching me for a second too long to be casual.

“Maybe. But I think it’s worth seeing, moves or not.”

With that, he lowered himself onto the ladder and started down.

“Didn’t interrupt anything, did I?” the man asked him when he reached the bottom.

“No,” Cain said as my feet found the rung and I started my descent.

“You look familiar,” the guy from the parking lot said when I made it down.

“Georgie,” I said. “We sort of met at The Hollows.”

“Right. Riiiight,” he added, shooting Cain a look that must have meant something to him, but I had no idea what was transpiring.

I could have sworn I heard Cain mumble, “Shut up,” under his breath.

“This is Ronan,” Cain said.

“This is Daniella,” Ronan said as he wrapped an arm around the shoulders of a pretty brunette with smudged eye makeup and a very short skirt on.

If he was going to insist that she go up first like Cain had, Ronan was going to have one hell of a view. I guess maybe that was the plan.

“Wanna head back up?” Cain asked. “Dezi has probably stopped by with the sweets by now.”

“Sweets?”

“He’s friendly with the local bakery. And by ‘friendly,’ I mean he has their personal phone numbers, and they exchange Christmas cards. That’s how much business he gives them. In return, the bakery calls him when they have a bunch of stock that they are going to throw away. Dezi swings by and scoops it all up.”

“And brings it all here.”

“All? No. Dezi can eat an entire bakery display case all by himself. But he drops us off some.”

“Is Dezi one of the guys who has moved out already?”

“Yep. He’s out on a giant estate with his very rich wife, buying her cute animals anytime he pisses her off.”

“Seems like a better plan than flowers.”

“Yeah, who needs flowers when you can get a mini cow who eats all the flowers on your property?” he asked. “You and your ex didn’t have any pets?”

“Perry thought pets were filthy and unnecessary.”

“I take it from your tone that you don’t agree.”

“Who would agree with that? I don’t think I’ve ever met someone who doesn’t think their dog is the best thing that ever happened to them.”

“What kind of dog would you get if you could go out right now and get one?”

“I have no idea. I could fall in love with any kind. I’m hoping that when I move to an apartment, I can find one that allows pets. You aren’t allowed to have dogs here?”

“We are. Some of the guys have had them when they lived here. I honestly just never considered going out and getting one.”
