Where We Stay

Page 61

by Madeleine Rose

About half an hour later, Blair finally steps outside. She stops when she sees me waiting.

“Need a lift home?” she asks.

“Nah. Just wanted to make sure you got to your car all right.”

Her gaze moves over the short distance between the entrance and her Kombi.

“Those ten steps could’ve been grueling,” she says, raising her brows.

“You never know.”

Blair laughs as she unlocks the doors. “Hop in. I’ll take you home.”

I should tell her I’m fine to walk.

I get in anyway.

The second I close the door, the space between us suddenly feels much too small.

The drive to my house is quiet except for me giving Blair directions and the low hum of music coming through her speakers.

When she pulls into my driveway, neither of us reaches for the door.

“Thanks for the lift,” I say, turning toward her.

“Anytime.”

Her eyes meet mine and hold.

The air inside the Kombi shifts. Blair’s gaze drops to my mouth for half a second, and every sensible thought leaves my head.

I lean toward her.

She doesn’t pull away.

But I’ve been drinking, and she hasn’t. Even if I were completely sober, kissing her would break the one rule I promised myself I’d never break.

I stop before I can close the space between us.

A slight frown pulls between Blair’s brows, but she doesn’t say anything.

“Will you be able to find your way back?” I ask, forcing myself to lean away.

“I’m sure I’ll manage.”

“Pass me your phone.”

Blair raises a brow. “That sounds suspicious.”

“So I can give you my number,” I explain. “In case you get lost.”

She unlocks her phone and hands it over. I add myself as a contact, then call my number. My phone vibrates inside my pocket.

Blair watches me with narrowed eyes. “Now you have mine too.”

“Practical.”
