It had been a while since I came to Enzo’s house. I always stopped by the funeral home.

He opened the wooden door. Irene went into the small kitchen, like she had been doing this a million times.

“What do you have?”

“Yesterday’s pizza. I can order some chicken.”

“No. I’ll have the pizza. You can order something,” she said, grabbing the box of pizza and microwaving it. As she sat down, Enzo pulled me aside.

“Why was she crying? What did you tell her?” He looked at me like he was accusing me.

“Yara.”

I wondered if he had any idea Irene had a crush on him. Probably not. He’d always been completely oblivious to attention from women. Irene could’ve tattooed it across her forehead, and he still wouldn’t have noticed.

It was the only reason he’d stayed single for so long.

“So, what did Irene say?”

“She’s angry, and she’s afraid. She also… thinks it would hurt Yara if she died. She needs to talk with Yara.”

“It’s blatant how much she misses Yara.” Enzo scoffed. “This is such a mess. I don’t like it.”

“Neither do I. So, How are you feeling?” I placed a hand on his shoulder.

“I’m okay for someone who has been buried in a coffin alive,” he said with a shrug.

Death wasn’t new to either of us, but it was scary just the same to see him like that.

“Don’t die, Enzo.”

He blinked. “You too. I’ll go insane without you.”

“Did you see anything? Anything at all?” I asked.

“I wanted to remember, but there’s a big hole in my memory. I opened the door and then… there’s nothing.”

“Don’t push it. Let it be.”

“I want to remember,” he said with a frown.

“Do you think it could be a woman?”

“A woman?”

I told him what Yara said. His brows furrowed, processing the information.

“Do you seriously think a woman could have lifted me into a coffin and then pushed me into the incinerator? All by herself?”

“It’s impossible, I know,” I said with a shrug. “But maybe she found someone else to do the heavy lifting. Another scapegoat. Logan Jones could’ve been one of many.”

Enzo hummed. “Could be. The Strangler is smart. And let’s be real, it makes more sense for a guy to do it for a woman he’s infatuated with.”

“I think it was the piece we’ve been missing all along.”

Enzo leaned back. “Do you need help? I can do some snooping.”

“I have already sent some information to Reah. Let’s wait and see what she finds. In the meantime, just don’t get yourself killed, Enzo. Please.”
