Ryden stared at me with suspicion as I walked toward the door, leaving Trish on the couch. Enzo followed us out.

“Should I come?” he asked.

“No, stay right here.” I looked at Trish, the way her eyes tracked us. “You know where she lives?”

Enzo’s eyes became wide.

“You mean…”

“I don’t know, but I need to know.” I closed my eyes. “I don’t trust her.”

Enzo leaned closer. “It’s not her,” he whispered. “It can’t be her.”

I stared at him. If it wasn’t her, good. But I had to be sure.

“Fine, I’ll send you her address.” He relented with a sigh. He looked like he was ready to fall apart.

“And Enzo, stop looking at her like that. I know you’re confused, but you need to act like nothing has changed between you two,” I said, giving him a stern look. “As far as we know, she’s still a victim. Act like it.”

I didn’t want to give anything away before I’d even started. If she was the Strangler, I had to keep her in the dark.

I was opening my car when my phone pinged with a text from Enzo with Trish’s address.

I drove and drove, chasing the ghosts and monsters that had always stayed invisible.

When I stopped the car by an old apartment building, Trish’s, I was spiralling.

“Take a deep breath.”

My eyes were filled with bleeding colors. Red of blood and purple of bruises. My hands shook.

“What if it’s her?” I asked. “What do we do?”

Ryden shook his head as we climbed the curving, rickety stairs.

“Here we are.” I stopped at the door, picked the lock, and slipped into the dark room. Ryden followed me in.

The hall was empty save for an old, creaking chair. In the bedroom stood a bed, its white coverlet neatly folded in place.

I rifled through the drawers and rummaged through the closets, searching for any trace of evidence.

Everything was as it should be. I found nothing. Nothing to suggest she was guilty of anything.

I didn’t know why I was here. But something… something had drawn me here.

“I found nothing.”

“I haven’t either,” I said, rubbing my jaw. “But I’m not convinced she’s innocent.”

“Why?” he asked.

“I don’t know.”

I don’t.

“She stares at me when no one’s watching. She’s too good to be true.”

Ryden shook his head.
