Far from it. “How long ago did he leave?”
“I’d reckon five minutes.” Her voice dropped to barely a whisper. “Is he a body taker?”
“Not quite.”
“That man gives me red flag energy. Should I avoid him?”
“Yes, but that’s all I can tell you at the moment. Stay and enjoy the pool, though, now that he’s gone.”
I hung up and glanced at Jinx. “So much for rest and recovery.” At least I knew Dr. Adam was doing his part. It wouldn’t be long before I heard from him.
I dragged myself to the refrigerator to scrounge for food, completely forgetting Penny’s intrusion until I spotted the Tupperware container with a bright yellow sticky note. She’d written “feel better soon” in pink glitter pen.
I opened the container and inspected the contents. Ham and cheese casserole with peas. Not bad.
I heated the casserole in the microwave and ate it straight out of the container. Classy, thy name is Maya.
I jumped at the trill of my phone. I was tempted to ignore it and finish the casserole until I saw Dr. Adam’s name on the screen.
I hit the speaker button. “Any news?”
“I think you’ll want to come to my office for this one.”
Right. I snapped the lid on the casserole and returned it to the fridge. Jinx meowed her concern.
“Whatever it is, I can handle it,” I told her. “I used to deal with much worse than Keith Irwin.”
Jinx didn’t appear convinced.
I hustled to my golf cart and drove to the healer’s office. I still felt a little sluggish. Hopefully I’d rebound as the day progressed. I had a feeling I was going to need every ounce of strength I possessed.
Dr. Adam was alone when I arrived.
“Good news or bad news?” I asked.
He held up a tube. “This can’t be his blood.”
“Why not?”
He walked over to his microscope. “Look at his sample on the slide. What do you see?”
I squinted through the lens and swallowed a squeak. “Gold flecks.”
“A werewolf’s blood doesn’t have gold flecks.”
No, it didn’t. But Keith was a werewolf. He was known by Knox and Chaz. He’d served in the Dogs of War.
And yet the evidence was right there on the slide.
Keith Irwin was a god.
I staggered back from the microscope. The situation was even worse than I realized.
“What are you going to do?” Dr. Adam asked.
There was only one idea I hadn’t pursued, mainly because it involved a visit to someone off the island. Someone from my past I didn’t expect to ever see again. Someone who was just as likely to betray me as she was to help me.
But for the sake of Evermore, it was a chance I had to take.
