“Bitch, glowing, like the fire was in my veins and his. There was no fire though.”

“Based on the way he had that pussy leaking, there was a fire, cousin.”

I glared and she shrugged.

“You’re a fire witch; he’s a fire vampire. Don’t you think that means y’all can meet somewhere in the middle?”

“I don’t know what it means, but I have to figure this out because for some reason he feels like my blood is his life source.”

“You’re acting like that’s a bad thing but it sounds sexy as hell.”

“Girl.” My eyes rolled hard and she shrugged.

“It does but I have to go. Lunch is over and I have to get back to work. We’re doing an audit. You going to let them fix your storage room?”

“I sure am. If he wants to spend his money, ball the fuck out.”

“My girl.” Nee smiled big before she threw her arms over her head and started rolling her hips. “And you better thank him properly too. Make me proud, cousin.”

“Nee, please stop.”

She hugged me. “Love you, hoe. I’ll call you later.”

This vampire was insistent on inserting himself in my life, but before that happened, I needed to do a little research to figure out what the hell I was dealing with. I also foolishly decided to make things a lot easier for him to have access to me.

I walked to the counter, stepping behind it and dug through the junk drawer, removing a safety pin. After pricking my finger, waiting for a dot of blood to appear, I smeared it on the bite marks on my neck and wrist before reciting the words to release the blood veil boundary I’d put in place.

“Venn yo ouvè, limit yo disparèt, mwen ekspoze pou m pi pre l.”

The spell was actually, the vein is open, boundaries disappear, I am exposed to him, be near, but with the difference in translation, the Haitian meaning of the spell ended up being, the vein is open, the boundaries have vanished, I lay myself bare to be closer to him, which felt a little more weighted. Whether I wanted to admit it or not, that was exactly what I was doing.

The minute I entered that suite, boundaries weren’t the only thing that disappeared. My logic went right along with them.

“Ay, I need your laptop. Where is it?” my brother Hale asked at the same time I answered the call from Jakoda so he could tell me how bad he was going to hit my pockets to cover the repairs to Uri’s storage room.

Uri Montgomery.

The first thing I did after I got home this morning was take a shower to remove the smell of smoke from my skin. While I waited for the water to heat, I pulled up the website for Sweet Inferno and went right to the About Us section to find the legal name for her store so that I could search the business registry to find the owner. Didn’t take much but now I knew who I was dealing with.

“Don’t know, you want it, look for it,” I called out to Hale before focusing on the call from Jakoda.

“What’s up, Kyron?”

“She give you shit?” I asked, already knowing she did.

“Little bit but she let us do our thing.”

“How much?”

“Complete restoration, about five stacks. That covers the walls, ceiling, and floor, plus the electrical.”

“Aight run that. Send me an invoice. How long will it take?”

“Two days max.”
