“Doubtful.” The other witch snorts. “Demons don’t fight with the good guys.”
“We’re reformed,” Lennox says, crossing his arms over his chest and committing to the cover story we developed for this mission.
“Reformed?” She throws her head back with a laugh and slaps her thigh.
“Yes,” Jett says. “Reformed. We’re good boys now.”
“Yeah, okay. And I’m the kind of witch who rides a bubble instead of a broom and shoots glitter from my magic wand.”
“Do you actually ride brooms?” Jett asks. Hynde slaps his chest with the back of his hand.
My witch studies each of us. “But we saw you use your powers. You were just like the rest of them.”
“We didn’t use them against you,” Hynde points out. He doesn’t mention that the whole thing was staged for our mission here. And it looks like that plan has worked exactly as we hoped since the witches haven’t vanquished us yet.
Finally. We’ve been here for two weeks with no leads.
“That doesn’t mean we trust you.” The feistier witch flicks her wrist, and a wall of rippling pink energy shields them both from us.
“I thought she said she didn’t use bubbles,” Jett mutters in Hynde’s ear.
“Let’s go, Sera.” The dark-haired witch drops the shield, then tugs on the arm of the other. Sera.
“Wait.” I stomp over to them, stopping inches from my witch. “You need to remove this thing between us.”
“That wasn’t me.” Her breath fans over my lips as she grinds out each word.
My hands fist her leather jacket, tugging her into me, our noses almost touching as she glares up at me.
“Such a cunning little witch.” My fingers brush against her hot skin. “Beautiful, but cunning.”
“Back away.” The blade of a dagger comes under my chin, met with the caress of soft skin. The scent of lily and honey clouds around me.
The demon world is rich in all the deadliest sins. Lust is no exception, but that’s not love. It’s not care or devotion. It’s desire in its simplest form, driven by a need for instant gratification.
“Oh my Goddess.” The other one shrieks, then Sera is pulled from my clutches. I hadn’t noticed the gold magic had started spinning around us again when we touched. As soon as my witch was pulled away, the gold snapped like a taut thread.
“I’m brewing some desensitizing potion tonight. That’ll have to do until we get home and have Celeste give you a full-body cleanse.”
“What’s that?” Hynde asks.
“Unmated she-wolves use something similar during their heat. It suppresses their…arousal.”
“I beg your pardon.” Sera gasps. Her head whips toward her fellow witch.
“Girl, be glad I’m not suggesting we put you naked in the middle of a chanting circle,” she retorts.
“Ohh, kinky.” Jett grins as he leans an elbow over my shoulder.
Sera and her friend both glare at me as if this is all my fault, but they’re talking about unmated wolves; demons have no interest in those matters.
“Let’s get out of here.” Sera gives me an unreadable look, and something inside me twists uncomfortably.
“Wait!” Lennox calls as the girls hurry away from us. The three wolves that were fighting earlier have taken a stance close to the witches. “What are we meant to do about this thing?” He waves a hand up and down, gesturing to me as if I’m diseased.
“I don’t know. Try to break it, and we’ll do the same.” The increasing distance stings my chest. When they’re out of sight, it burns, making me rub at the ache.
“We should tell Catori,” Hynde says.
