He moves to the next.

The evidence-room door.

Ben waits until the man turns his back.

“Coast Guard security! Drop the weapon!”

The man spins and fires.

Ben pulls back as the bullet strikes a pipe above us. Water bursts from the metal, spraying across the hallway.

Ben returns fire.

The intruder ducks through the evidence-room door.

“He’s inside,” I whisper.

“And the exterior door is on the other side.”

“He’ll take the evidence and leave through the waterfront.”

“Not if Keating blocks that exit.”

Ben signals for me to stay close.

We move down the hall.

Water rains from the broken pipe, making the floor slick beneath our shoes.

Ben reaches the evidence-room doorway and looks inside.

The room appears empty.

The waterproof case is open.

The velvet pouch is gone.

“He took the glass,” I whisper.

Ben points toward the overturned table.

A boot is visible beneath it.

The intruder is hiding.

Ben motions for me to move back.

Before I can, the man rises and fires.

Ben knocks me down.

His body covers mine as two bullets strike the wall.

“Ben!”

“I’m fine.”

He rolls behind a metal cabinet and returns fire.
