“He chose his family.”
“He chose a film that could destroy men more powerful than he would ever be.”
“What’s on it?”
Donald looks toward the compass in my hand.
“Names. Dates. Payments. Every shipment that passed through Blackwater.”
“Women and children.”
His silence answers me.
“Weapons,” I continue. “People. Everything Simon moved through the island.”
“Simon?” Donald laughs without humor. “Simon was still learning how to tie his shoes when those routes were established.”
Simon’s face changes.
“You worked for me.”
“I protected you.”
“You betrayed me.”
“I built everything you inherited.”
Donald raises his gun.
Not toward Naomi.
Toward Simon.
For the first time, Simon looks afraid.
“You caused the explosion,” I say.
Donald glances toward the dock.
“The ship was compromised. I did what was necessary.”
“You tried to kill everyone aboard.”
“I tried to destroy the evidence.”
“Including Simon.”
Simon strikes the gun away from him.
Naomi drops to the deck as the two men collide.
“Run!” I scream.
She rolls beneath the railing and reaches the stairs.
Donald slams Simon into the bridge wall. The gun skids across the walkway.
Naomi grabs it.
