Something in her face changes.
“What happened?” Ben asks when she ends the call.
“Naomi Chen has been located.”
Ivy moves closer. “Is she safe?”
“Yes. Officers found her at home.”
Relief passes across Ivy’s face.
“What about my gallery manager?”
“Peter Lang isn’t answering his phone.”
“He may be asleep.”
“His wife says he left their home at noon and never returned.”
Ivy frowns. “He was supposed to meet a new artist at the studio this afternoon.”
“Was that appointment on your schedule?”
“No. He arranged it himself.”
Marquez takes out her phone.
“What was the artist’s name?”
“I don’t know.”
“Find out.”
Ivy logs into the gallery calendar. She searches today’s appointments, then shakes her head.
“There’s nothing here.”
“Check deleted entries,” Ward says.
Ivy opens the administrative history.
One appointment was deleted at three forty-two this afternoon.
Twenty-five minutes after Simon recorded himself destroying Hazel’s music box.
Ivy restores it.
The screen displays a single name.
Donald Cross.
The room goes silent.
“That can’t be right,” Mom says. “Why would Donald use his real name?”
“He wouldn’t,” Nathan answers.
