“If I overstepped, I can go,” Summer said, moving to step back.
Realizing I was taking too long to respond, my hands found her hips, and I pulled her close to me, pressing my lips against hers. Everyone in the garage could see, but I didn’t particularly care. In fact, Summer was mine, and I wanted everyone to know that.
Our kiss was cut short by our son squawking in his stroller, demanding attention.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” I chuckled, pulling away and crouching next to him. “Was I not giving you enough attention?”
I quickly unbuckled the straps holding him in place, and Milo smiled up at me, happy to be out of the stroller. I held him snug, turning this way and that so he could look around.
“Yeah, pretty cool, huh? This is where I work, buddy.” I turned to Summer. “Why don’t I show you guys around, introduce you to everyone?”
Summer bit her lip, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth as she nodded.
“Did I hear the word cookies?” Cole asked, walking up to us with a grin.
Naturally, the fucking toddler of the garage overheard.
I took the container off Summer with one hand, keeping my focus on Milo, who was doing his best to grab at my ears.
“Sweet!” Cole said, eagerly accepting the container.
“Share them with everyone else, and if you don’t leave some for me, I’m firing your ass.”
His smile dropped. “Uhh…”
“There’s plenty more at home you can eat,” Summer assured me softly.
I shook my head. “Nope. Those are house cookies. These are work cookies. Anyway, this is Cole. He is the baby of the garage.”
“Hey! It’s nice to meet you.” He beamed at Summer, shaking her hand. “You brought cookies, so you are officially my favorite.”
“Get back to work,” I growled as Summer giggled.
“And who’s this?” Stuart asked excitedly, hand moving toward Milo.
“Ah, ah. Wash, dude.” Stuart looked down at his hands and we both snickered. “Engine grease and babies do not mix.”
“Hang on!” Stuart jogged over to the sink in the corner that we used to clean up when a customer arrived.
When he returned, Stuart grinned at Milo, reaching out to shake his little hand now that he’d washed up a bit.
“Summer, this is Stuart. Stuart, this is Summer and our son, Milo.” I pointed at the desk where our resident speed demon was on the phone. “That’s Avery. She’s amazing, a little older than Cole and a terror behind the wheel. We have to hide the nice cars from her. Kelly is somewhere. She also helps out, and Mac is on a supply run, but he’s been with me since the beginning.”
“Hello,” Summer greeted, her cheeks pink. “It’s lovely to meet you. I’ve wondered about all the names I kept hearing.”
“You know, we need to get both of you over to the house.” Stuart shook Milo’s little fist as the baby inspected his fingers closely. “You can get a good look at what a six-year-old boy is like. So many little cars…and dinosaurs. And stuffed animal picnics.”
Stuart blinked in focus again, and both Summer and I laughed. “Sorry, got distracted there. But the invitation stands. We’d be thrilled to have y'all over for dinner.”
“That sounds lovely.” Summer looked up at me, and I nodded.
“We’ll hammer out the details,” I said.
“Make sure you have a cookie!” Summer insisted.
Stuart pouted. “I would if I could. The lord above decided I was too epic and decided to humble me with a gluten allergy.”
Summer’s face fell. “That sucks!”
