“Having fun, Mrs. Lee?” he eventually whisper-yells into my hair. His warm breath caresses my ear, sending a shiver straight down my spine, despite the heat in the room.
“I was until my stalker showed up,” I tease, my hands naturally sliding up his chest to lace around his neck.
Sam chuckles causing a delicious rumble against my chest as he pulls me an inch closer, swaying us perfectly into the rhythm of the music. “Not a stalker. Just a husband taking full advantage of his VIP access.”
His hungry blue eyes drop to my lips, intense with a smoldering heat that makes the rest of the club fade into background noise. He bends his head down, his lips brushing against my temple, then down the shell of my ear.
“You look breathtaking tonight, Lex,” he murmurs. “But you always have.” His hand presses into the small of my back, guiding my hips against his. Feeling him hard between us startles me. The effect I’d been hoping for is obvious now. “But you knew exactly what you were doing dancing like that.”
A proud laugh escapes me. “Maybe.” I shrug, enjoying the feel of his rigid cock against my belly. There’s something heady about knowing he’s like this because of me.
“Good,” he whispers, his lips lingering against the skin of my neck, making my knees go weak right there on the dancefloor. “Because I’m not taking my eyes off you for the rest of the night.”
I lean back enough to peer up into his deep blue irises, the heat between us so thick it completely eclipses the flashing strobe lights and the thumping bass of the club. “I think my work here is done,” my voice carries more of a daring edge as my hands slide slowly down the front of his shirt. “Plus, it’s getting way too loud in here.”
Sam’s eyes darken further. A dangerous smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth. “Are you saying you want to call it an early night, Mrs. Lee?”
I can’t help but wonder why he keeps referring to me by my married name.
I don’t hate it.
“I’m saying I’m ready to go home,” I confirm, leaning up on my tiptoes so my lips brush against his jawline. “With my husband.”
He doesn’t need to be told twice. His hand slides down to link tightly with mine, our fingers intertwining as he turns to address the girls. “Ladies, I’m stealing my wife,” Sam announces over the music, his tone completely unapologetic. “I’m taking her home to dance in private.” He winks.
Everly and Lilly immediately burst into delighted giggling, while Claire gives me a silent “Hell yeah.”
“Go.” Summer laughs, waving us off.
The cool, crisp night air hits us the second we step past Jimmy and out onto the sidewalk, making me shiver in my dress. Before the chill can settle, Sam pulls me against his side, slipping his heavy suit jacket off his shoulders and draping it over me. It’s warm and smells intoxicatingly of cedar, amber, and him.
When we reach his car, he opens the passenger door for me, his hand lingering on my waist as I climb inside. As soon as he shuts the door and walks around to the driver’s side, my heart executes an excited, fluttering rhythm. I try to push down my overeager smile, but it’s nearly impossible. I’ve waited so long for this. It barely feels real.
Sam slips behind the wheel, turning the key in the ignition, but he doesn’t immediately put the truck in drive. Instead, he turns in his seat, his blue irises burning with desire as he reaches over to cup the back of my neck, his thumb tracing the soft skin behind my ear where the blue wildflowers were resting in my hair on our wedding day. “You have no idea what you do to me, Lex.” His thumb presses lightly into my pulse point.
“Show me,” I reply, my voice barely above a whisper in the privacy of his car.
He places my hand on his thigh, dangerously close to his cock, I can only assume is still as firm as it was against my pelvis earlier. A devastatingly handsome grin curls his lips. “I’m pretty sure I already did.” He winks. “But I’m happy to show you in much more vivid detail once we’re home. Because if you touch my dick right now, I’ll come in my pants.”
I bite my lower lip and giggle. Why does the thought of him losing control like that make me come nearly unglued?
Sam wastes no time shifting the car into gear, pulling out onto the road, and heading straight for Sutter Creek.
The quiet of the truck is electric, thick with an unspoken anticipation that makes every second stretch out endlessly. Neither of us speaks for fear a single word could break this spell. The sound of the tires humming against the pavement is the only noise breaking the stillness between us. Yet the air in the cab is practically buzzing.
Out of the corner of my eye, I watch Sam’s knuckles tighten on the steering wheel, his jaw set in a hard line as his eyes stay glued to the winding dark road ahead. Every time his hand shifts gears, his arm brushes against my knee, sending a shockwave of heat through me. I lean my head back against the leather seat, my chest heaving with shallow breaths. I’m completely intoxicated by the scent of his cologne and the magnetic pull of this delicious man.
The tires crunch against the gravel driveway as Sam kills the engine in front of the main house. The dashboard lights fade. There’s only the sound of our breathing.
The house is dark. It’s bathed in the quiet stillness of the rolling field, illuminated under a canopy of stars. For a beat, neither of us moves.
Sam reaches across the console, his large hand finding mine and sliding his fingers firmly between them. “We’re home.”
“Yes.” I look over at him.
Lord hammercy, why am I so damn nervous?
Sam unlatches his door and steps out, coming around to my side before I even have my seatbelt off. He pulls my door open, holding his hand out to help me out. The night air is crisp, but surrounded by his jacket and the warmth of his palm, I’m well aware my jitters aren’t from the temperature. I don’t feel the chill at all. It’s the anticipation of what’s to come that’s causing me to tremble.
