“Yeah, until these professors start getting on my damn nerves.” She laughed. “I just turned in this long ass essay today. I was ready to throw my whole laptop across the room.”

Kendric laughed. “Damn, it was that bad?”

“Hell yeah. And don’t let them give you an assignment with a bunch of instructions, then turn around and act like you supposed to know what they meant.”

I laughed because I knew exactly how my sister got when she was stressed about school. She’d call me complaining about an assignment, then turn around and make a good grade on it.

“Girl, you always talking about throwing that laptop,” I told her.

“Because that bitch be testing me.”

Kendric shook his head, laughing as he reached for his drink.

“So, what about you?” Lha’Kayla asked, looking at him. “What you do besides hang around this nigga?”

I almost choked on my food.

Cassian looked up from his plate. “Damn, lil sis. What I do to you?”

“You got my sister here, and won’t let her come back home to her family.”

“Damn, but yo’ sister didn’t tell you why I got her here?” he shot back at her.

“Yeah, she told me.”

“Okay, then.” Cassian smirked. “But yo’ sister love it here. She just doesn’t know it yet.” He looked over at me, winked, and licked his lips.

I didn’t say anything. I just rolled my eyes.

“Anyways, back to what I was saying.” My sister shook her head and rolled her eyes at both of us. “What do you do?”

Kendric laughed. “I work with his ass. I’m the COO of the company.”

“Oh, so he really does have a company?” my sister asked.

“Yeah, he does.”

She nodded. “How long y’all been knowing each other?” she asked.

“Since we were kids,” Kendric answered. “Been dealing with this nigga damn near my whole life.”

“And you ain’t tired of him yet?”

“Every fucking day,” Kendric replied without missing a beat.

I busted out laughing while Cassian shook his head.

“Both of y’all can get the fuck out of my house,” Cassian told them, but I could see the smile on his face.

Lha’Kayla laughed, and I noticed how comfortable she’d gotten since sitting down. When she first arrived, she’d been looking around like she expected somebody to jump on her. Now she was sitting at the table cracking jokes with everybody.

I was glad she had come. I missed having my sister around, and for the first time in a while, I was actually enjoying myself without thinking about all the shit that had happened.

Once we finished eating, I got up and started clearing the table. My sister followed me into the kitchen and helped load the dishwasher.

“So, sis, why you ain’t called mama yet?” she asked, handing me another plate.

“You know why I ain’t called her. Remember, that man over there took my phone.” I pointed toward Cassian.
