Promised To A Menace

I finished eating and took my dishes over to the sink. Once I had everything cleaned up, I headed upstairs to finish getting ready for the office.

I had some business I needed to handle, along with a few clients I wanted to check in on. Just because I had shit going on at home didn’t mean I could neglect my company. I had people depending on me, and I wasn’t about to let my personal problems interfere with the business I’d worked my ass off to build.

Once I finished getting dressed, I grabbed my phone, keys and everything else I needed before heading out.

By the time I pulled up to Jefferson Security & Risk Management, I already had a few calls waiting on me. I had been so caught up dealing with Shakaylen and the bullshit surrounding David that I hadn't had a chance to check in on everything going on at the company.

I parked in my usual spot, grabbed my things, and headed inside. I spoke to a few of my employees on my way to my office, stopping briefly to check on a security assignment we'd been working on before continuing down the hall.

As soon as I stepped into my office, I saw Kendric sitting across from my desk, looking comfortable as hell like he owned the motherfucker.

“Nigga, don't you have your own office?”

He looked up from his phone and laughed. “Damn, good morning to you too, my nigga.”

“What's good?” I walked around my desk and set my things down.

“Shit, I was waiting on yo' ass. We got a couple things we need to go over.”

“Aight, what's up?”

Kendric sat forward and put his phone away. “First, we need to talk about that security assignment coming up next week.”

“Which one?”

“I’m talking about the one with the president of Ashbourne University.”

“What about her?” I sat up in my chair, resting my hands on the desk.

I wanted to know where the hell he was going with this.

“Man, I heard some shit about her and what she got going on at that college.”

“Aight, nigga, talk. What’s up?”

“I heard she got caught messing around with one of the students there.”

“What the fuck?”

“Yeah, and apparently, that’s why she wants security. Some people been on her ass about it, and she said she’s been getting death threats.”

I leaned back in my chair, thinking about what he’d just told me.

“Aight. Before we take that assignment, I wanna know exactly what we’re walking into.”

“That’s why I wanted to bring it to you first.”

I planned on looking into it myself. Kendric had never given me a reason not to trust him, but there was a difference between what somebody heard and what actually happened.

“See what else you can find out about the threats,” I told him. “I wanna know what she’s been getting and whether somebody’s actually made a move on her.”

“Bet. I’ll see what I can find.”

We went over a few more details about the assignment before moving on to the other things we had going on at the company. Once we finished discussing business, I decided to fill Kendric in on the shit that happened with Shakaylen.

“Yeah, but bruh, let me tell you about Shorty’s ass last night.”

Kendric leaned back in his chair. “Oh, Lawd. Don’t tell me her ass done called the police to the crib again.” He started laughing.
