Promised To A Menace

“Fuck.”

I dropped into the chair, gripping my phone in my hand while my mind raced. There had to be another way out of this shit. I just had to find it.

About an hour later, the door finally opened, and Amanda stepped inside wearing the same bright-ass smile she’d had earlier.

“Alright, baby girl. It's time.”

My stomach twisted because I already knew what the hell she meant. I'd spent the last hour sitting in this room trying to wrap my head around the fact that my own father had dropped me off to be auctioned to a bunch of fucking strangers.

I stood from the chair, gripping my purse as Amanda stepped aside and motioned for me to follow her.

“Come on. They're ready for you.”

I didn't move right away.

“And what happens after this shit is over?”

Amanda looked at me for a second. “Depends on who wins.”

Wins.

Hearing that word made my stomach turn. Like I was some damn prize instead of a person.

“By the look of things, though,” she continued, giving me another once-over, “you might have yourself a bidding war tonight.”

“Lucky fucking me,” I muttered.

Her smile widened. “Leave your purse here. You can collect it afterward.” I set it on the chair, my phone still tucked inside, before following her into the hallway. My heels clicked against the floor with every step.

I didn't know who was waiting on the other side of wherever she was taking me. But I knew one damn thing. I wasn't going home with anybody without a fight.

She led me into another room, and the second I stepped inside, I stopped.

One entire wall was covered in black glass.

“They’re on the other side,” Amanda said.

I looked over at her. “Who?”

“The bidders.”

My eyes went back to the glass. All I could see was my own reflection staring back at me.

“So they can see me?”

“Every inch of you.”

I frowned. “But I can’t see them?”

“That’s the point.” Amanda smiled.

“So I’m supposed to stand in here while a bunch of strangers look at me, and all I get are their voices?”

“Pretty much.”

This shit was getting crazier by the fucking minute.

“And what if I don’t like whoever wins?”
