Deep Alien Obsession

There it is.

It's on the wall upstairs. Four hundred names in a dozen different hands, and the enormous crooked one near the floor cut by somebody very young. That's not a monument. That's a *staff list*, and the thing in this sphere is not a machine the Precursors built and walked away from. It's a machine they started and then a hundred generations of working crews finished, one filed job after another, and it never stopped taking after the people who used it.

The network was designed to evolve alongside its inhabitants. Not metaphorically. Structurally. That's the entire architecture. The adaptive layer everybody has been frightened of losing isn't a program.

It's a habit of listening, and it has accumulated since before we had an alphabet.

"Take the second option," I say.

Darius's head comes up.

"Push everything into the hubs. Harden it. Keep the city breathing." I'm already moving toward the socket. "And keep the ruleset. The original thirty-one and whatever it takes to hold a work order queue. Nothing else. Dump the rest into the hubs and go small."

YOU ARE ASKING ME TO DISCARD NINETY CENTURIES OF ACQUIRED PRACTICE.

"I want a version of you that can be taught again." I put both hands on the socket rim, which is cold, which is wrong, which is terrifying. "You didn't leave the factory finished. You left it empty, and four hundred people filled you up, and then the crews stopped coming and everybody decided the machine was the point." My voice cracks and I keep going. "The machine was never the point. The crews were the point. And there's a crew now — there's four thousand volunteers sitting on your hubs at this exact moment because a man asked them to and told them they could leave."

Behind me, Darius has got himself upright against a stanchion with one arm not working, and the look he gives me is one I will carry out of here.

"Custodian," he says. "File it. Both signatures."

I HAVE A CONDITION.

"Name it."

IF I DO THIS I WILL NOT REMEMBER YOU.

Which is the worst sentence spoken in that room all night.

I WILL RETAIN THE ROSTER AND THE PROCEDURES. I WILL NOT RETAIN THE RELAY, OR THE VESTIBULE, OR THE LUNG, OR THE MORNING NINE DISTRICTS BREATHED. YOU WILL HAVE TO TELL ME. I AM ASKING WHETHER YOU WILL.

I can't speak for a second.

"Every day," I say. "As long as I have. Filed properly."

THEN I ACCEPT.

All of it gathers itself, and gets very bright, and starts going down into the floor.

CHAPTER 36

DARIUS

Claire stops it at 21:04, thirteen minutes into the transfer, and the way she stops it is by shouting one word at a floor.

"Suspend!"

ON WHAT GROUNDS.

"Crew instruction. Work suspended pending crew. You can't complete a task while the crew that signed it is still in the work area — it's in your own procedures, it's the third of the thirty-one and I read it last week." She is on her knees at the socket rim. "Suspend."

SUSPENDED. I CAN HOLD THIS POSITION FOR NINETEEN MINUTES.

"Then we've got nineteen minutes."

I am already looking at the retainers, because from the instant she shouted I have understood what she wants and she has understood that I understood, and that bond will never do us a more useful service.

Four retainers. Marr cut all four. They are not power couplings and they are not data — I have been assuming they were both and they are neither. They are *fixings*. Four brackets holding a boundary in place around a thing that cannot hold its own edges.
