THE CHAMBER IS IN CONTAINMENT. ATMOSPHERE IS BEING WITHDRAWN. I DID NOT ORDER IT.
"Then who did?"
THEY FORCED A DISTRIBUTION LENS ON DAY FIFTY. THE SIGNATURE MATCHED A HULL FAILURE. THE PROTOCOL IS NINETY CENTURIES OLD AND CORRECT: SEAL THE VOLUME, WITHDRAW ATMOSPHERE, PRESERVE THE CITY. I CANNOT LIFT IT. LIFTING REQUIRES A CREW ON SITE.
Claire goes silent on the link.
"How many are in there?"
FOURTEEN. TWO DAYS AGO, NINETEEN.
So: a hub carrying distribution for four districts, sealed in a containment the machine cannot lift, fourteen of Marr's men inside running out of air, and the only two who can lift it are an engineer with a bad leg and an architect eleven kilometers overhead.
"They'd have shot her on a gantry," Tomas says.
"Yes."
"Noted. We're in at six."
Claire comes down overnight. Neither of us argues; a paired plate needs two hands.
The western corridors are worse than the spiral. Whatever they did on day fifty upset something structural, and the reach has shifted since. Three collapses on the approach. We do the last stretch in breathers, because the containment bleeds at its edges and the corridor sits at sixteen percent.
At the outer bulkhead, their gear. Cutting rigs. A dead control slate. Three bodies nobody carried out.
Past that, the door. Paired plate, running challenge — not the trade examination from the western node. A containment override, wanting considerably more.
"Two inputs again," Claire says. Through the breather her voice belongs to somebody else. "One's a load figure. Yours."
"And the other?"
She reads it twice. "It wants me to accept liability."
"Explain that."
"A release. Does the crew accept that lifting containment may propagate a breach into the wider network." She looks up. "It's making us sign, Darius. Ninety centuries ago somebody wrote a form so this could never happen by accident, and I have to fill it in while fourteen men suffocate behind that door."
"Can you?"
"I can, if you give me the load figure and I trust it absolutely, because that number is the entire basis of the release." A pause. "If you're wrong, I've signed for a breach across four districts."
What happens next I still cannot properly describe.
I don't calculate the figure. There is no time — it wants maximum tolerable propagation across a manifold class I have never inspected, and the honest answer is four hours with the archive. Instead I hold the plate and let the number arrive, and it arrives the way a torque value arrives when you have turned ten thousand of the same fitting. Not arithmetic. Recognition.
And while it arrives, Claire is writing the release, and she puts the figure into it before I speak.
I feel her take it. She reaches through, lifts the number out of my hands, puts it in the form and signs, and not one word passes, and the door opens at 07:11.
Containment lifts. Atmosphere returns over ninety seconds, the loudest of my life.
Fourteen men down on the hub deck. Eleven conscious. Two of the rest we bring back and one we don't.
My people go in with the medic and start hauling them out, and nobody asks whether we should. Tomas gets a man twice his weight over one shoulder, swearing the whole way up. Ovel gives his breather to somebody who shot at us six days back.
One of them, sitting against a manifold with his hands shaking, looks up.
"Why," he says.
