Happy to see me?
“Would you like to sit down?”
“No, I’d like us to settle what we need to settle.”
“You seem upset, Alma.”
Her blatant hypocrisy and condescending words set my teeth on edge.
“Kate, have you forgotten what happened?”
“Look, I’m sorry I accused your sister,” she finally says with a sigh.
“Not just my sister. I think you believed I was involved too, didn’t you?”
“I was just spitballing. You were the one who chose to leave, Alma.”
I somehow manage to stop myself from grabbing the little oval glasses she’s just put back on her nose, and shoving them down her throat.
“Alma, it’s my job to make difficult decisions. I have nothing against you, but this company comes first.”
“Nothing against me, really?”
My number-one fan is already losing patience.
“Look, I can’t say I’m thrilled that you’re having a relationship with our CEO, but that’s your business. I won’t share that information with anyone.”
“Don’t pretend you’re doing me a favor, Kate. You’re bound by confidentiality.”
“I’m aware of that,” she mutters. “And as long as we keep things strictly professional, everything will be fine.”
The air between us turns icy.
“That will be all, Alma.”
“Skylight Pictures isn’t going to let us off the hook, you know. We’re going to have to put up a united front, and with that in mind, maybe we should start by being supportive instead of shooting each other down? Remember that we’re part of the sisterhood?”
Kate nods unconvincingly, then waves me away.
I wonder if the metal arms of those little glasses are strong enough to poke someone’s eyes out?
