Runa leaned against the bathroom doorway; I hadn't heard her approach. She raised an eyebrow. "Are you talking to yourself now?"
"Apparently."
She studied me for approximately two seconds. Then her expression changed. "Oh."
My stomach sank. "Oh what?"
Runa's gaze dropped to the hand I'd unconsciously placed over my stomach, then back to my face. "Oh."
"Stop saying oh."
"You're pregnant."
I stared at her. "I don't know that."
She smiled. "You know."
I looked away, my throat tightened unexpectedly. "I think I am."
Runa stepped inside and quietly closed the door, all teasing disappeared as she sat beside me. "How late?"
"Enough."
"Nausea?"
"Every morning."
"Smells?"
"Coffee tried to kill me."
That made her smile, then she reached for my hand. "Have you tested?"
I shook my head. "I wanted to pretend I was imagining it for another few hours."
"Fair."
Silence settled between us, then I whispered, "I don't know whether to tell him."
Runa turned slowly. "Bryn."
"I know how that sounds."
"Do you?"
I sighed. "I'm not trying to hide his child from him."
"Good."
"I'm trying to keep him from losing whatever sanity he has left."
Runa's mouth twitched. "That's a much harder job." Despite myself, I laughed but then the fear returned.
"He's so close to the edge, Runa."
Her expression softened. "I know."
"I feel it." That made her pause.
