I straightened. "What did he find?"
"Volken traced three weapons shipments through Rotterdam. Same type of ammunition used at the mansion."
My jaw tightened. "Supplier?"
"Shell companies. But one payment bounced through an account we've connected to Ceasar before."
"Fuck."
"Lucien found something too."
"What?"
"One of his informants heard Ceasar was recruiting."
"For what?"
"War." The word sat heavily between us. I looked out at the dark road.
"And Draugr?"
Roman was silent for a beat. "Draugr found two of Ceasar's old men."
"Found?"
"One is still breathing."
I almost smiled. "Generous of him."
"Apparently he was feeling charitable." Despite everything, a rough laugh escaped me.
Then Roman's tone changed. "What aren't you telling me?" He knew me too fucking well.
I looked down at my hands. "Another name came up."
"Who?"
"Malakai." Complete silence. Even through the phone I could feel Roman's reaction, when he finally spoke, his voice was quieter.
"No."
"That's what I said."
"Malakai is dead."
"Anton claims otherwise."
"Anton is a lying arms dealer."
"Usually."
Roman exhaled. "What exactly did he say?"
"That Ceasar's people talked about the prince returning. Said an old alliance had been restored." Roman didn't answer, I could picture him wherever he was, standing absolutely still, mind moving through centuries of memories.
Finally, he reveals, "Volken heard the name too."
My entire body tightened. "What?"
