Her hand bats away my excuse. “You’re still young.”

“But now I know better.”

I can’t lower my guard. Not again. As appealing as his offer is, I’m scared of him and the hurt he’s capable of causing. But that’s only if I allow it.

Although, sleeping with Chance once or twice would scratch a very persistent itch. Maybe that would finally give me peace. Except, just thinking about kissing him gets me flustered. My cheeks heat and I berate myself. Who’s the virgin in this situation?

“Do you like Chance?” I find myself asking aloud.

Mom’s expression goes soft. “He’s a sweet boy.”

I huff out a laugh. “More of a man, Mom. He’s twenty-five.”

“Still a kid in my eyes. I’m glad you had him at your side growing up. You two were inseparable for many years.”

I’m suddenly reminded of something. “Did you give him permission to be at your house when you’re not home?”

She tips her head. “Why wouldn’t I? He wanted to surprise you by getting everything ready for the rodeo, and right after you’d hurt your foot. Very thoughtful of him.”

“He’s winning across the board,” I mumble.

“Those Benson boys are lucky charms. Can you imagine if both my girls end up married into their family?”

“We’re not discussing marriage.”

“No pressure, but you should consider it.”

Gosh, that sounds familiar. “Thanks for the advice.”

“That’s what I’m really here for.” Mama June’s pat on my shoulder is a maternal gesture that insists I listen. “Now, finish up whatever you were doing on your phone. No more distractions after that. You might be my daughter, but I’ll still fire you if necessary.”

I roll my eyes. “Don’t worry. I’m not that incompetent.”

She wanders away to help Papa Neil with the line that’s starting to form in front of our booth. I decide to give myself five minutes to read the rest of Chance’s messages, regain composure, and then get back to work.

At least ten new texts flash on the screen. That’s in addition to the stream he’d sent before Mom’s intrusion. The man is less subtle than a stampede in a library.

Heartbreaker: Was that too forward?

Heartbreaker: I can’t help it. These thoughts have been trapped inside me for years. It’s a relief to set them free after all this time.

Heartbreaker: I’m glad you finally know the truth. I’ve never been comfortable with anyone but you.

Heartbreaker: How’s the market? Are you really busy?

Heartbreaker: Or just ignoring me?

Heartbreaker: I’m probably annoying you…

Heartbreaker: Don’t I get credit for giving you space? I’m not across the street watching you, but I want to be.

Heartbreaker: If you don’t answer soon, I’ll be forced to take drastic measures.

Heartbreaker: Maybe you want me to stalk you.

Heartbreaker: Please, Wildflower. Put me out of my misery.

Heartbreaker: One way or the other. I just need to know. Patience is no longer a virtue for me.
